WATCH: Tom Shields Focused On The Positives In Toronto

2016 CANADIAN OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC TRIALS

Along with some of his Cal teammates, American butterfly swimmer Tom Shields made the trek up north to compete in Toronto at the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials.

Shields first event was the 200m freestyle where he threw down a 1:51.14. that time was less than two seconds shy of his 1:49.32 personal best from the 2010 US National Championships.

Following the 200 free he swam in the heats of the 200 fly where he went a 2:01.09. Shields is a flyer through and through, however his focus is more on the 100 than the 200.

His freestyle times continued to impress as he came within half-a-second of his best time of 49.41 in the event with a 49.89 in the heats. In finals, Shields was even faster sporting a 49.53 performance to finish just over one tenth slower than his personal best from August of last season.

Shields’ last swim was the 100m butterfly where he dropped a 54.05 to place ninth. Shields didn’t take the second swim that he qualified for, and was not happy with the time overall.

Shields is one of the top contenders to make the US Olympic Team in the 100m butterfly at US Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, in late June.
