The NC State Wolfpack came within a tenth of a second of taking down a seven year-old American Record in the 200 free relay tonight at Day 2 of the 2018 Men’s ACC Swimming & Diving Championships.

Ryan Held led off with a 18.87, and he was followed by Justin Ress (18.41), Jacob Molacek (19.19) and Coleman Stewart (18.87).

NC State coach Bobby Guntoro tweeted out later this evening

The record time of 1:15.26 belongs to Stanford, and dates back to the 2011 season.

Tonight’s time by NC State puts them first in the NCAA this season, and is about fourth-tenths of a second faster than Cal’s 1:15.73 from the Georgia Invite back in December.

Considering that Held was sporting a beard, this squad, whether or not it features the same lineup, or whether someone like Giovanni Izzo gets subbed in, should be a lock to dip below 1:15 at NCAAs in a month and challenge for a national championship in this event.

What a great week of racing. Congrats to all the swimmers. Does anyone know if video of the finals will be posted?

Are we ignoring the fact that FSU crushed this relay too? and is sitting in third after tonight? Probably the best start to the meet this team has had in the past 7 years.

As a former Nole who trained under the infamous Frank Bradley…this is really exciting to see the team crushing it. And they aren’t just a sprint team anymore(although they had 5 guys go 19.7 or faster), they have guys that can do the 200s very fast like Polianski, Kalisz, Telford, and Loock. It’s obvious the impact that coaches Studd and Quevado have done a tremendous job!!

At this point I doubt he’ll make the meet.

41.89 automatic A cut in 100 free finals, 42.01 in prelims also an A cut. PACK sprinters went 1 through 4 in finals. Pretty sure he’ll make the meet. None of the Pack top swimmers were tapered for ACC’s including Molacek.

Sometimes I forget how crazy that Auburn record is. They averaged 18.52s for all 4 of them.

Matt Targett was a monster of a relay swimmer, rubber suit or no rubber suit.

Coleman Stewart looked like a submarine coming off that final turn.

NC State excels in those free relays.
