WATCH: Dominique Bouchard Makes Olympic Team And Can’t See Her Time

In the heats of the 100m backstroke Dominique Bouchard put up a time of 1:00.43 which was just shy of the FINA ‘A’ qualifying standard, however qualified her second behind new Canadian record holder Kylie Masse heading into finals.

In finals it was an absolute dogfight due to the amount of depth in women’s backstroke. Bouchard was the only one in the field who was close to Masse, dropping a 59.96 in order to finish second also under the FINA ‘A’ time.

After Bouchard touched, she couldn’t see her actual time and had no idea that she had in fact qualified for her first Olympic Games, and that she would be heading to Rio this summer.

The time marks the second time in her career that Bouchard has been under one minute in the 100m backstroke and currently ranks her 13th in the world this year.

Bouchard will also be swimming in the 200m backstroke later in the meet where she’s in a great position to add a second event to her Olympic schedule. She’ll have to race backstroke ace Hilary Caldwell among others, making a 200 backstroke Olympic berth no easy task.
