Coleman Allen is in a great position to make his first Olympic team after finishing the morning prelims as the second seed heading towards tonight’s final.

Allen swam a time of 53.75 in the heats which puts up just one one-hundredth behind Mack Darragh’s 53.74 top seed.

Allen would have been the third seed, however top seed going into the meet Santo Condorelli was disqualified for what is believed to be a non-simultaneous touch at the 50-wall after sporting a 52.32 to lead the way.

The disqualification heightens Allen’s chances of making the team, because it puts him in a position where he doesn’t need to get under the FINA ‘A’ qualifying time like many of the other athletes.

Since the Team Canada will want to send a men’s 4x100m medley relay to Rio, there are certain exceptions which would allow the top place finisher in this 100 fly final to go regardless of whether or not they meet the FINA ‘A’ standard.

Canada needs to fill out the roster spot on the relay, so likely Allen or Darragh will be able to punch in a ticket to Rio tonight regardless of how their time compares to the FINA ‘A’ standard.
