Watch: Blue Water Swim Club, A Little Picture Show Documentary

Video courtesy Thomas Moore.

The Blue Water Swim Club in St. Clair County, Michigan got its start in 1973 in the back yard of a house in Port Huron. In the forty-three years since, the team has made a huge amount of progress, expanding to include a thriving age group program incorporating multiple levels, a Masters team, stroke clinics, and a feeder-style program into the local high school swim system.

Head coach Ken Sygit, a former BWSC swimmer, leads the team. Bennett Wynkoop, Jared Beauvais, and John Faleki serve as assistant coaches.

The above documentary covers the club from its start over forty years ago to today.

Blue Water swimmer Grace Shinske says “Our team was started in a very unusual way in the 1970s, but we made it work. That has been the precedent for our club ever since. We just set our minds to something, we persevere, and we make it work. This is the story of our rag tag team, and we hope that it can inspire other people, not only swimmers, to know what they want and go get it.”

Fantastic! Worth watching. I’m jealous- I want to work for this club (or go back in time and be a kid swimming on it)! These folks really have their priorities straight. Most kids will never be elite swimmers- but their team experience is something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. They will remember these times as some of the best days of their lives. I got verklempt watching the coach tear up talking about his kids growing up and leaving. Well done BWSC. You are a credit to the sport.

I have swam on BWSC since I have been 7 years old and it was nothing short of amazing. Every experience, memory, lesson, and friend made during those 8+ years meant the world to me. Every meet from states to little local meets were some of the best times I had in my whole life. The coaches are outstanding and last year was my last year with Ken so watching him tear up at the end of this video made me bawl a little bit haha. But overall great coaches and a great program for everybody! I do wish that you and everybody could be a part of this fantastic club. It was honestly the best thing that ever happened… Read more »
