Volgograd Region Dominates Day Two of the Russian Junior Championships

The Volgograd region finished the second day of the Russian Junior Championships with the lead in the medal table having collecting six gold, four silver and two bronze over the first two of the competition. The championships which sees the best 15-16 year old males and 13-14 year old females race for national titles is being held in the Vogograd region.

Daniel Kitov was the star of the evening collecting two gold. Kitov took the men’s 100 breaststroke in a tight race with Evgeny Somov. Kitov took the event in a time of 1:02.54 followed by Somov who hit the wall in a time of 1:02.62.

Kitov was also part of a 4 x 100 mixed freestyle relay that broke two records on the day. His Volgograd team swam a record setting 4:07.08 in the morning and followed that up with a 4:02.65 to win the event in the evening.

Kitov’s teammate Yaroslav Potapov won the 400 freestyle, once again in a close finish. Potapov took the event in a time of 3:58.54 followed by Pavel Zhimharev who finished second in a time of 3:59.16.

The third Volgograd swimmer to take gold was Catherine Zotov who won the 800 freestyle posting a time of 8:55.97. She was followed by Ekaterina Sorokina who recorded a 8:56.95. Volgograd’s Yana Kurtseva finished third in a time of 9:12.05.

Kliment Kolesnikov won the men’s 100 backstroke in a time of 57.13 followed closely by Volgograd’s Pavel Tatarenko who touched in a time of 57.54.

Valery Egorov won the women’s 100 backstroke with ease taking the event in a time of 1:02.70 a second and a half ahead of the field.

Egor Kulmov took the men’s 100 butterfly in a time of 54.70 over a second ahead of the next competitor.
