Latvian Nikolajs Maskalenko was the star of the 2014 Latvian Sprint Championships in Riga that wrapped up on Saturday evening, and while he was unable to get his 4th National Record in Saturday’s finals, the 21-year old still added another title to his tally.
The swimmer for the SK Delfins posted a 59.33 to win the men’s 100 breaststroke, just missing the 59.09-second record for short course meters that he swam in prelims.
Another swimmer, however, moved into the record-breaking picture, as Antons Voitovs beat out the defending champion Janis Saltans in the men’s 50 backstroke final 24.09-24.68.
Both swimmers were faster than Saltans’ Meet Record of 24.77 set last year, but it was Voitovs who broke the Latvian National Record of 24.28 in the final.
Saltans would get one back later in the session swimming a Meet-Record tying 22.36, beating out Voitovs’ 22.94.
Arina Baikova just missed out on her second National Record of the two-day meet, swimming to a 29.54 in the finals of the women’s 50 backstroke. That just missed the 29.47 mark set in March of 2013, but at only 14-years old, Baikova should have more opportunities to break that record.
She was second in that meet to Finland’s Sigrid Sepp, who was a 29.02 for victory. Sepp swept the backstroke events at the meet.
