Vladimir Morozov Breaks European Record With 25.51 in 50 Breast, #3 All-Time

2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Russian sprinter Vladimir Morozov showed his versatility with a European title and a continental record in the 50 breaststroke at 25.51.

Morozov, 27, dominated the event late in the first finals session of Short Course Euros. In the final individual event of the day, Morozov crushed a 25.51, besting the field by three tenths of a second and taking a tenth off the standing European record. It was a record windfall for Morozov. His European record was also the meet record (both were set by Italy’s Fabio Scozzoli when he won gold in 2017 with a 25.62), and he also took down a Russian record held by Kirill Prigoda at 25.68.

The swim should move Morozov to #3 all-time in the event:

Top 50 SCM Breaststrokers, All-Time

  1. Cameron van der Burgh (RSA) – 25.25 (2010)
  2. Roland Schoeman (RSA) – 25.45 (2010)
  3. Vladimir Morozov (RUS) – 25.51 (2019)
  4. Fabio Scozzoli (ITA) – 25.62 (2017)
  5. Felipe Franca (BRA) – 25.63 (2014)

Making the feat more impressive, Morozov came right off that win to anchor Russia’s 4×50 freestyle relay. With only about 13 minutes between events, Morozov split 20.25 and Russia won gold in the relay by eight tenths of a second.

Really impressive and under rated (textile) performance by Schoeman

Agreed. It’s extremely funny to me that two of the top 3 50 breaststrokers ever are non-breaststrokers, and that Adam Peaty, the undisputed sprint breast king, isn’t even in the top 5.

I would chalk that up to not swimming scm with a full taper. If he swam it in 2020 in Tokyo the day after he wins gold in the 100 breast then I would bet a large sum of money that he would break the record.

Also, is it not weird to anyone else that the top times from “non breastrokers” are from non major competitions? Maybe inferior judges, or lenient judges? More fly kicks were allowed?? I dont know, but just saying. Is there video of any of these top 3 times? By the way, dont get me wrong.. .I know Vlad is a great breaststroker and sprinter.. but 3rd all time?? I have my doubts until I see the swim alongside a negative test,

And I’m already eating my words as I realize Vlad did this time in a “Major competition” today or yesterday depending on where you live. Still… I want to see video

Insane recovery between events.

Eh, they’re 50s. He definitely didn’t have insane recovery in the 100m IM at SCM worlds in Canada (2017? When MA took the title despite Vlad having lowered the WR twice that season).

That’s not to say he isn’t involved with the Russian PED scandal, just that being good at doubling up on 50s isn’t a smoking gun. I hope he isn’t, as I think he has some of the best skills/fundamentals in the sport and is fun to watch race, but honestly I think everyone at that level is worthy of suspicion.

It’s more of a smoking gun when you kind of suck relatively speaking in the 100s compared to your 50 times. But just like you, I am not saying he is involved either.
