Virginia Tech Men, Virginia Women Take Wins on Day 2 of Hokies Tri

The #3 Virginia Cavalier women demonstrated their dominance against Towson and ACC foe Virginia Tech, taking the Tigers 289-64 and the Hokies 258-95 over two days of dual meet action at Virginia Tech.  The Virginia Tech women won against Towson 285-66.  The men’s meet between those same squads was taken by Virginia Tech who crushed Towson 282-69 and outlasted #21 Virginia 212.5-104.5 to remain an undefeated 11-0 for the season.  Virginia took down Towson 285-66.

The Virginia women won all but one event in duals against Towson and Virginia Tech with Jen Marrkand leading the way on wins for both the 100 fly and 400 IM.  Her IM was a solid three seconds ahead of second place Fiona Donnelly from Virginia Tech (4:25.94.)  Her fly was a tighter race as she edged out Tech’s Klaudia Nazieblo 54.85 to 54.97 to claim the only double win of the day.

Virginia’s NCAA leading backstroker Courtney Bartholomew cruised to a win for the 100 back in 53.60, nearly two seconds ahead of teammate Megan Moroney at 55.58. Towson’s Jacy Icard took third overall but claimed the top points against Virginia Tech with 57.15.

Ellen Thomas and Hanne Borgerson each led 1-4 Virginia sweeps in their freestyle events.  Borgersen won the 1000 free with 10:00.21, and Thomas took the 50 with 23.40.  Towson swimmers each took wins against the Hokies in those events, with Ashley Illenye finishing at 10:20.46 in the 1000 and Charlotte Holz turning in a 24.16 for the 50.  Megan Moroney also took the 200 free for the Cavaliers with 1:48.55, holding back Virginia Tech’s Jessica Hespeler at 1:49.41.

Virginia Tech’s Weronika Paluszak turned in an NCAA B standard to take the only non-Virginia win of the women’s meet.  She blasted splits of 33.97 and 33.57 to overtake Virginia’s Laura Simon on the back half of the 200 breaststroke, 2:13.31 to 2:14.08.

The Cavalier women took first and second place finishes for both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay, with winning times of 1:40.09 and 3:21.56.

The Virginia Tech men won both duals for the weekend to stay undefeated for the season, managing to take down ACC rival Virginia for the third year in a row.  The Hokies won both relays by close margins, turning in 1:30.00 to beat out Virginia’s A squad in the 200 medley relay at 1:30.44.  Tech also managed to win the 400 free relay 3:00.88 over Virginia’s 3:01.44.

The Hokies took the top overall finish in five individual men’s events, starting with Ian Ho‘s victory in the 50 free with 20.49.  Teammate Lucas Bureau managed to sneak past Virginia’s Matt Lockman as well by .01, finishing at 20.79 to Lockman’s 20.80.

Brandon Fiala took the victory for the 200 breaststroke by exactly two seconds, beating Cavalier Murat Yildirim 2:01.72 to 2:03.72.  Norbert Szabo had more of a challenge to win the 100 fly as Virginia’s Zach Fong finished only .05 behind at 49.36 to Szabo’s 49.31.  Other winners for Tech were Lucas Bureau in the 200 free (1:39.39) and Robert Owen in the 400 IM (3:58.61.)

The Cavaliers had wins from Sam Magnan in the 1000 free (9:22.47) and Austin Quinn in the 100 back (49.85.)
