Virginia high school swim coach Clayton Joyner dies at 29 after heart attack

Falls Church High School (VA) swim coach Clayton Joyner passed away on Monday, almost two weeks after suffering a major heart attack. Joyner was just 29 years old.

Joyner had wrapped up his third season as head coach at Falls Church, which he graduated from back in 2002. Prior to joining his high school alma mater, Joyner was the head coach at Robinson High, leading the girls team there to a state title in 2010.

He also coached at Holmes Run Acres of the Northern Virginia Swim League as well as Victory Lane Aquatics Club, a now-USA Swimming sanctioned club he started in 2008.

Joyner was a former swimmer, starring for Falls Church High School and the Camelot Community Club Swim Team in the ’90s and early 2000s.

Joyner suffered a heart attack on April 22nd and spent the next two weeks at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Intensive Care. He died on May 5th. His memorial service will be held next Saturday, May 17th, with a Celebration of Life happening afterwards at Holmes Run Acres pool.

Clayton was a peer of mine who enjoyed having a good time. In fact, I’m sure you could make a movie about this party guy, cause he knew how to throw them.

Even at the parties he couldn’t stop talkin about how proud he was of the kids he taught and coached.

The world would be a better place if there were more Clayton Joyners around.
