Another chunk has been taken out of the 11-12 National Age Group Record in the boys’ 100 yard backstroke. For the second time this month, and the third time in the last 6 weeks, the 11-12 boys’ National Age Group Record in the 100 yard back has gone down.

Vinny Marciano from the Morris County Swim Club swam a 53.43 in prelims on Sunday at the 2014 New Jersey Age Group Championships. That knocked a tenth off of the 53.54 that Destin Lasco did on January 19th, and gave him the top seed in the 14 & unders race by four-and-a-half seconds. His previous best time was just 55.20 from back in October.

Marciano went out in a 26.02 – which is actually his best time ever in that disance and would put him 18th on the all-time list among 11-12’s. There was no 50 back at this meet, or Marciano might have taken a run at that record as well (Lasco holds it at 25.02, pending ratification).

He did, however, also swim well in a handful of other events. He ended up scratching a lot of finals, but in prelims he swam a 4:51 in the 500; a 55.0 in the 100 fly, a 2:03.3 in the 200 IM, and a 22.9 in the 50 free.

I have been truly honored to be able to coach such a well rounded athlete and humble human being. I have learned to challenge myself as a coach to make him a better swimmer, and not just him, all of my swimmers. Most people think that swimming comes fully natural to Vinny, it doesn’t. What they don’t see are the countless practices where we just work on technique, not just his speed. He is always working hard to be techniqually fast, not just fast. Coaching him is something I will never take for granted because I know, it doesn’t happen often. To see the smirk and shrug of the shoulders after an amazing race, and Vinny say “eh, I still… Read more »

Saw it live earlier today. My son was lined up behind the blocks when Vinny finished and looked up at the board in celebration. So exciting – Congrats!!! Vinny also has excellent sportsmanship and he and his family are humble and always congratulate other kids on their swims, too.

No surprise.
He had swum 1.01.60 in the 100 back at the Cerave Invitational in long course 2 weeks ago. It was very close to the NAG record.
So we knew he was ready for big things in yards.
We’ll see if he can swim a 52 in final.
And we must look at his 200 back too because the Murphy’s NAG record is in jeopardy.
I’m sure Destin Lasco will respond in the next few weeks.
Both Vinny Marciano and Destin Lasco are backstroke phenoms.
