PRESS RELEASE – VILLANOVA

VILLANOVA, Pa.– Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving hosted Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon. The men’s squad topped the Bears, 170-90 while the women won 178-81.

The relays remained strong on Saturday afternoon with the men’s and women’s 200 medley relay teams winning their respective event. For the women, Darby GoodwinHeather FarleyAlexa Fabbri, and Taylor Wilson finished in 1:45.45.Andrew KelleyTyler NussbaumJake Hoin, and Stephen Krecsmar won with a time of 1:31.92 for the Villanova men.

J.P. Naughton, Jordan Fetterman, and Andrew Kelley were all double winners during today’s meet. J.P. Naughton won the 200 freestyle (1:45.11) and 500 freestyle (4:50.23) while Jordan Fetterman finished first in the 200 butterfly (1:58.34) and 200 breaststroke (2:12.18). Andrew Kelley won the 100 backstroke (51.72) and 100 freestyle (47.57). Also for the Wildcats Nick Spina placed first in the 100 breaststroke (59.51) and second in the 50 freestyle (21.56), while Chris Paynter finished first in the 50 freestyle (21.52). For the women, Caitlin Daday got things started for the Wildcats as she won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:41.11. Daday also placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:07.75). Winning the 200 backstroke was freshman Rayann Jaryszak with a time of 2:05.05. She also went on to win the 100 butterfly finishing in 57.52. The Wildcats swept the 200 freestyle with Elise Pidduti finishing first, Alexa Fabbri second, and Mary Spillane in third.

Next up, the women will travel to Richmond on January 26th. The men will return to the pool on January 27th when they compete in Morgantown, W.V

PRESS RELEASE – URSINUS WOMEN

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Ursinus College women’s swimming team fell to Division I Villanova on Saturday, 178-81, but put up a number of impressive performances despite seeing its incredible dual-meet winning streak snapped at 56.

Junior Peyten Lyons was the lone Bears swimmer to top the podium on the day, earning first place in the 100 back by finishing in 59.05. Lyons also earned a third-place finish as part of the group of Bears that raced in the 200 medley relay. Senior Olivia Tierney, junior Clara Baker and senior Sydney Gundersen joined Lyons, finishing in 1:49.83.

Tierney added another third-place finish in the 200 breast after finishing in 2:27.15 and added a second-place spot on the podium following the 100 breast, which she finished in 1:09.00. Baker collected a second third-place finish in the 100 fly (58.13).

Freshman Rebecca Warren and senior Meggie Leitz each left Villanova with a second-place finish. Warren earned hers in the 1000 freestyle (11:11.01), in which junior Kathryn Longeneckerfinished third (11:29.17). Leitz earned her second-place finish in the 200 fly (2:09.24).

Freshman Sophie May finished third in the 200 back (2:08.54).

The Bears are off until next Saturday when they travel to Franklin & Marshall. They’re back in Collegeville on Feb. 3 to host Washington College.

PRESS RELEASE – URSINUS MEN

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Ursinus College men’s swimming team swam at Villanova Saturday, falling 170-90.

Two Bears placed atop the podium in separate events. First, sophomore Daniel Powell took first in the 1000 freestyle (10:09.61), putting up the second-best time on the team this season, and personal best on the year. Senior Christopher Barthold followed Powell, finishing third in the race (10:22.30).

Freshman Michael Prior was the other Bear to find himself on top of a podium, as he won the 200 back in 1:57.52. His time was just two seconds slower than the season-best time he put up at the West Chester Invitational earlier this season. Prior also earned a third-place finish as part the foursome that raced in the 200 medley relay to open the competition. Joining Prior in the group that finished in 1:40.08 were junior Devin Nielsen, senior Colin McNamara and junior Travis Venables.

McNamara left Villanova with three third-place finishes. After the 200 medley relay, he swam in the 200 fly (1:59.42) and 100 fly (54.44). Venables earned a second third-place finish, touching the wall in the 50 free in 22.01.

Sophomore Jacob Menzer was the lone Bear to finish second in an event. He touched second in the 500 free, clocking in a time of 4:50.37.

Sophomore Casey Lear and junior James Callaghan rounded out top-3 finishers for the Bears. Lear claimed third in the 100 free, finishing in 48.95 while Callaghan touched third in the 200 IM in 2:05.94.

The Bears are off until next Saturday when they travel to Franklin & Marshall. They’re back in Collegeville on Feb. 3 to host Washington College.
