[VIDEO] 11-Year Old Carson Foster Goes 1:03.4 in 100 Meter Fly

Carson Foster, as a 10-year old, broke Michael Phelps’ National Age Group Record in the 100 long course meter butterfly, which garnered him lots of national headlines.

As always, records in the 10 & under age group need to be kept in perspective, but that doesn’t mean that Foster has slowed down. Last weekend, the Cincinnati Marlins swimmer posted a 28.49 in the 50 long course fly and a 1:03.44 in the 100 long course fly at the Ohio Long Course Junior Olympic Championships.

As far as anyone can tell, these are the fastest times by an 11-year old at least since the USA Swimming database started keeping reliable data (around 2001). There’s not great information about what the likes of Phelps, Crocker, etc. went at that age, though we know that Phelps at least was already very fast, but regardless, those times rank Foster at least among the best at that age in U.S. history.

He is also ranked 1st nationally, and is already the Ohio LSC Record holder in the 100 fly for 11-12’s. The second-best American 11-year old in the event in the 100 fly since 2001 is Victor Cantera Lopez, who was a 1:04.0 in 2004. The second-best this year was actually the swimmer below who you’ll see relatively-close to Foster: Isaac Grinberg of the Sylvania Tsunami Swim Club, who was a 1:04.9

He still has a ways to go to get the overall 11-12 NAG Records: Michael Andrew has the 50 fly in 26.22 and Chas Morton has the 100 fly in 58.74 from 1983, but Foster will have all of next summer to accomplish those times.

His father, Jim Foster, shared these videos of his races from this last weekend. Foster’s last swims before turning 12 will come in just over a week at the Central Zone 14 & under Championship meet in Topeka, Kansas.

I have met him before at swim meets…. he is a strong kid despite being a little short for his age. Very impressive though.

Congrats to Carson!
And it looks like the Foster family is a swimming family. In the last US age group rankings lists, Jake Foster, his 12-year-old brother, is ranked second nationally in the 50 breast and in the 100 breast behind another young phenom Matthew Limbacher, and first in the 200 breast.

If you want fast US age group swimming, follow the results this weekend of the young backstroke prodigies Regan Smith (at the Minnesota state championships), Grace Ariola (at the Illinois age group state championships) and Destin Lasco (at the Middle Atlantic junior olympics).

If he breaks the 50 record that would be really impressive.
