Versatile Sydney Pesetti stays in state, makes commitment to Virginia Tech

Poseidon Swimming’s Sydney Pesetti will stay in the state of Virginia for her collegiate career, joining the Virginia Tech H2Okies next fall.

Pesetti is an exciting prospect in that she brings a bunch of potential events to the table. She’s tough through the middle distances of freestyle, but can also put together a sub-two-minute 200 fly along with solid backstroke races. That kind of versatility means she should find an immediate spot in Virginia Tech’s lineup based on where they have need.

Pesetti’s Top Times

  • 200 free: 1:48.11
  • 100 free: 50.63
  • 200 fly: 1:59.98
  • 100 fly: 55.29
  • 100 back: 55.43
  • 500 free: 4:52.02

The options for her post-season event lineup are all over the place. 200 free and 200 fly seem like good bets, as her lifetime-bests would have made the B final at the ACC Championships in both. Pulling a double either of those days isn’t out of the question, as Pesetti is experienced in tightly-packed sessions: she swam 8 individual events and all 5 relays at NCSA Junior Nationals over the summer.

Pesetti, who attends Deep Run High School in Virginia, follows her mother’s footsteps in attending Virginia Tech – her mother was part of the cheerleading team for the Hokies, and her father played professional hockey.

The H2Okies finished 5th in the ACC last season on the women’s side, but are within striking distance of NC State and Florida State as the conference continues to expand. Depending on where Pesetti fits in the meet lineup, she could be an immediate factor as a freshman in helping Virginia Tech track down those top four teams.
