Verona, Beata Nelson jump to #2 in WISCA Rankings

Note: The WISCA (Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association) rankings are based entirely off of the state’s database of top times. The top 30 times in each event earn points for their team, #1 earning 30, #2 29, #3 28 and so on down to #30 earning 1. Relay rankings are worth double points.

Coming off of her verbal commitment to the Wisconsin Badgers, national #2-ranked recruit Beata Nelson saw her Verona Area high school team jump to #2 in the WISCA rankings.

The leap comes in the last week of rankings before section meets start – this weekend will be the state’s sectional rounds, with the state championships happening the following weekend.

With that backdrop, Hartland Arrowhead continues to lead the Division 1 (big schools) rankings, marking two straight months at #1 in the weekly ranks. Verona jumps Middleton for #2 honors.

In Division 2 (for the state’s smaller schools), Madison Edgewood remains #1, their 6th-straight week at the top. McFarland is still second, and the biggest jump came from New Berlin Eisenhower, which rose to third after sitting 6th last week.

WISCA also has news on some of the most notable event entries for the various sectional meets. Nelson will again swim the 100 back and 100 fly – she broke the national high school record in the fly last year. Meanwhile Katie Drabot of #5 Cedarburg will swim the 200 free and 100 free – the 100 is a new event for her in the high school realm, but the versatile Drabot is almost a lock to break the state record of 49.77.

Like Nelson, Drabot is a top-10 recruit nationally, and has chosen Stanford for next season.
