Van Der Burgh Wins 100 Breaststroke in Durban

After putting up the world’s third fastest time in the men’s 50 breaststroke on Saturday at the South African Grand Prix in Durban Cameron van der Burgh returned to the pool today and collected gold in the 100 breaststroke. van der Burgh did not have as an impressive of a showing in the 100 as he did in the 50, posting a time of 1:01.79 which puts him 15th in the world.

Serbian Velimir Stjepanovic collected his third victory of the meet. Stjepanovic took the 400 freestyle and 200 butterfly on Saturday and on Sunday added the 200 freestyle recording a winning time of 1:50.45.

American teenager Michael Andrew won the men’s 50 freestyle in a time of 23.34. He also finished second in the 50 backstroke posting a time of 26.29 and added a fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.21.

On the women’s side Tatjana Schoenmaker completed the sweep of the women’s breaststroke. On Saturday she took the 100 and on Sunday she took gold in the 50 with a time of 33.08 and the 200 posting a 2:32.58.

Rene Warnes was also a multiple winner on the day. Warnes took the women’s 400 IM in a time of 4:51.79 and later on the day posted a 2:18.51 to win the 200 butterfly.

Chad le Clos swam limited events on Saturday and scratched his swims on Sunday due to the flu.

  • 100 freestyle – Erin Gallagher – 56.38
  • 100 backstroke – Mariella Venter – 1:03.43
  • 400 freestyle – Marlies Ross – 4:27.75
  • 50 butterfly – Hannah McLean-Leonard – 28.78
