Van Der Burgh, Hosszu Lead World Cup Money Lists After Cluster 1

Katinka Hosszu continues to own the FINA World Cup Series, but a new figure is topping the male money lists after the first cluster: South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh.

We’re just about to kick off the second cluster of the 2015 World Cup this weekend, but already more than half a million dollars (in U.S. Dollars) have been given out over the first cluster alone.

Hosszu, the three-time defending World Cup champion, leads all swimmers with $65,000 in prize money so far, $50,000 of that coming from the cluster bonus she earned after leading the first cluster’s points.

Van der Burgh also earned that $50,000 bonus for the men, and has taken in $56,000 so far on the tour.

A quick refresher on prize money:

Individual events:

  • Gold: $1500
  • Silver: $1000
  • Bronze: $500
  • World Record Bonus: $10,000

Cluster Point Bonuses:

  • 1st: $50,000
  • 2nd: $35,000
  • 3rd: $30,000
  • 4th: $20,000
  • 5th: $10,000
  • 6th: $5,000

The first cluster comprised the Chartes and Moscow meets. The second cluster (which rewards similar bonuses to the top 6) is made up of the Hong Kong and Beijing stops. The third and final cluster is composed of three meets: Tokyo, Doha and Dubai.

With the series moving to long course for the Olympic year, world records have been much harder to come by, making the cluster bonuses easily the biggest money-makers.

Here are the full money lists through the Chartes meet. (Money is split in the event of a tie, hence the halves).
