USA-Swimming has announced its roster of 19 men and 18 women who will be traveling to Dubai for the 2010 World Short Course Championships.
The notable name missing is Michael Phelps, which isn’t too much of a shock, but this is perhaps a more star-studded lineup than many expected. Ryan Lochte, the newly professional Tyler Clary, and Nathan Adrian are the stars on the men’s side. The women will be a stark contrast of youth and age, with veterans Natalie Coughlin and Mary Mohler at one end, and 15-year olds Missy Franklin and Madison White at the other. Joining them will be reigning breaststroke queen Rebecca Soni and the resurgent Jessica Hardy. Of note, FAST in Fullerton, California is making effective use of its status as a U.S. Olympic Committee Professional and Post Grad Training Center by sending 9 athletes to the meet. I’m perhaps most disappointed that Matt Grevers won’t be participating, as he’s one of my favorite swimmers to watch.
Strangely, the women’s team only has a single current collegiate swimmer (Micah Lawrence), whereas the men have 5 by my count (Adrian, Bollier, Klein, Phillips, Ryan). It will be interesting how these swimmers juggle their NCAA training cycle with competing at the World Championships. The men’s team shows the how where the balance of American superstar power in NCAA swimming has been for the past decade, with 5 swimmers who were Texas Longhorns, and 4 who were Michigan Wolverines. What I found most interesting about the men’s team is that only 2 out of their 19 swimmers (Adrian, Bollier) swim/swam for a college in the Western US, despite the heavy concentration of swimming powerhouses; perhaps throwing a tiny wrench into the perception that the West Coast is the place to go for the nation’s top prep stars. Only 2 other swimmers (Clary, Piersol) are originally from California. In reality, there are much higher concentrations in the Midwest and along the Gulf Coast. Possibly an insignificant stat, but intriguing none-the-less.
The meet will take place from December 15-19 at a brand new aquatics complex. This is likely the largest and most significant swim meet to ever be hosted in the Middle East, perhaps jumpstarting their slowly developing swimming infrastructure.

neither beisel or allison schmitt are currently nbac. beisel has never swum for nbac.
It’s obviously not that important of a meet if NBAC is not there.. Surprised there wasn’t a press conference about how LeBowman was taking his talents the SC Nationals…. I am excited to see how this team will fair, at some point we are going to have to get beyond MP and that he won’t swim forever. Schneider in the 100, everyone else “coming up” on the scene on both teams and how our National Teamers are doing 4 months off of Pan Pacs.
I wish Lezak were going. Beisel is in college now and if they are taking 4 for the free relays,Dwyer should have gone before before Walters who is 6th in the 200 ,so for most college swimmers it’s a tough meet.
Im looking forward to seeing what Schnider will do in the 100. That event seems a little liight this year
Hmmm, no Phelps, Beisel, Pelton, Schmitt etc. NBAC not too keen on Short Course?
Yeah, really interesting. I don’t know why, but skipping out on short course worlds just seem…Bowmanesque. As though it’s beneath NBAC.
