US Olympic Trials Pick ‘Em by Engine: Final Contest Results

by Davis Wuolle 9

July 04th, 2012 News

After some serious back-and-forth over the 8 days of US Olympic Trials in Omaha, a final winner has emerged. But first, our Day 7 winner was seanm, racking up 39 our of a possible 52 points on the day.  There were some big “upsets” on Day 7, where most people had Nathan Adrian winning the 50 Free and almost nobody had Ledecky taking the 800 on the women’s side.  Props to seanm for judging the field well to take a one point gain on the other entrants tied for second.  He (or she?) will win a cool prize from Engine for his swimming savvy.

Just a quick note.  Obviously with only two events on Day 8 there was a 200 (or so) way tie for first.  If you think you nailed Day 8, I will give you an enthusiastic high five the next time you see me on deck.  Scroll down for our final results…

I’m waiting now the predictions of other readers to compare. I think my country France would be happy with the 3 gold medals I predict. And same thing for USA. I think Frank Busch would be very happy with the 17 gold medals I predict.

Now we know the american team or almost (I’m waiting Missy drops the 200 free) I try some predictions for winners at the olympic games. I’m confident for the winners and perhaps a little optimistic for the times.

Men’s 50 free. Cesar Cielo in 21.24
Men’s 100 free. James Magnussen in 46.90
Men’s 200 free. Ryan Lochte in 1.44.10
Men’s 400 free. Tae-Hwan Park in 3.41.24
Men’s 1500 free. Sun Yang in 14.36.10
Men’s 100 back. Camille Lacourt in 52.20
Men’s 200 back. Ryan Lochte in 1.52.80
Men’s 200 IM. Michael Phelps in 1.53.60
Men’s 400 IM. Ryan Lochte in 4.04.80
Men’s 100 breast. Kosuke Kitajima in 58.80
Men’s 200… Read more »

Not too sure about Soni in the 100 breast and Leverenz in the 200 IM

Rebecca Soni wasn’t fully tapered at the trials. She had a big margin to qualify. She can easily swim under 1.05 and if she does who can beat her? I don’t see. The only thing she has to change is to stop the fast times in the heats and the semi-finals. It’s useless. Keep your energy for the finals! And same remark for Dana Vollmer too.

Very nice predictions– i hope missy drops the 200 free as well. My only arguement is i think elizabeth beisel will go under 4:30 and challenge the world record in the 400 IM.

I think that both the 400 and 1500 for men will be faster because those time are slower then Sun Yang’s best time, and in my opinion park can go faster than that. The women’s 4×200 free is a little too optimistic, i don’t think the USA has the 4th swimmer to get to that time, but who knows maybe someone will surprise us.

Schmitt has a really strong chance at the 2 and 400 free. she also did not need to be fully tapered and had enough lead to play with her races at OLYMPIC TRIALS. She will be a force to be reckoned with.

Actually, if I am correct, there was only a 3-way tie for first on day 8.
