Uruguayan National Runner-Up Nicolas Culela Given 4 Year Doping Suspension

The Disciplinary Tribunal of the National Anti-Doping Organization of Uruguay has handed swimmer Nicolas Martin Caulela Magnani a four-year doping suspension after a doping control test indicated the presence of Erypthropoietin, or EPO.

The test, done out-of-competition on February 7th, 2019, turned up a positive test for the performance-enhancing drug. The drug saw very common usage in the 1990s and early 2000s, especially in the sport of cycling, and is one of the substances that was used by cycling champion Lance Armstrong as part of his sophisticated doping scheme.

The four-year suspension implies that the Disciplinary Tribunal did not believe that the substance was taken unintentionally.

In 2018, at the Uruguayan National Championships, Culela swam 8 individual events and was the runner-up in both the 1500 free (16:57.91) and 800 free (8:53.38) in long course.
