The UNLV Rebels rolled past Grand Canyon last Saturday for a regular season finale in Las Vegas. The Rebels posted multiple huge wins in events on the day. Both the men’s and women’s 200 free were examples of excellent team finishes. In the women’s 200 free, the Rebels posted a 1-2-3-4 finish, led by Lauren Smith in 1:52.00. Smith led the race from start to finish. Behind Smith were Filio Raftopoulou (1:52.40), Camryn Wheals (1:53.86), and Jacklyn Scheberies (1:56.66), all representing UNLV. Scheberies swam the race exhibition (not for points), since only 3 swimmers from a team can score. The same occured in the men’s 200 free, where Ogi Maric led a 1-2-3-4 finish by the Rebels with a 1:38.34, also leading the field all the way through the race. Teammates Hayden Hemmens (1:39.04), Bryan Chavez (1:40.35), and Christopher Mykkanen (1:40.71) were the next swimmers in, with Mykkanen swimming exhibition.
UNLV had another 1-2-3-4 finish in the women’s 5o free, with Eva Kim leading the charge in 23.44. Caitlyn Schreiber (23.80), Kristina Schneider (24.00), and Alexia Taylor-Arredondo (24.19) touching the wall next. UNLV’s Ava Haase and Kennedy Hood also swam exhibition, touching in 24.12 and 24.16 respectively.
Kristina Schneider went on to win the women’s 100 free, clocking a 52.24. Grand Canyon picked up a runner-up finish in the race, with Salma Zaitoun touching 2nd in 52.84. Eva Kim went on to win the women’s 200 back, making for an interesting 50 free/200 back event schedule for her. Kim posted a 2:03.07 to win the 200 back.
UNLV’s Carissa Armijo won the women’s 200 fly and 500 free. In the 200 fly, Armijo swam a 2:02.86, leading the race from start to finish. She then swam the 500 free, touching in 5:00.70 to win the event by over 6 seconds.
Chrostopher Mykkanen went on to win the men’s 500 free, swimming a 4:30.33. Mazen Shoukry was a double event winner for Grand Canyon, taking the men’s 50 free and 100 fly. In the 50, Shoukry sped to a 20.82. He won a very tight race in the 100 fly, finishing in 49.62 to UNLV’s Bryan Chavez’s 49.69. Skoukry was out much faster than Chavez, 22.88 to Chavez’s 23.58 on the first 50. Chavez then came home in 26.11, while Shoukry was 26.74.

LAS VEGAS — The Grand Canyon men’s swimming and diving team lost 187-107 to UNLV on Saturday in its regular-season finale.
The Lopes were led by sophomore Mazen Shoukri, who recorded two top finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. He finished the 50 in 20.82 seconds and the 100 in 49.62 seconds.
Freshman Mikhail Lyubavskiy and senior Wiktor Jaszczak took second (9:29.51) and third (9:31.29) in the 1,000 freestyle.
The diving events were secured by senior Pietro Hufnagel Toscani. He won with 335.90 scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
In the 100 freestyle, the Lopes claimed second and third places with sophomore Samuel McKenzie (46.13) and sophomore Florent Janin (46.14).
Senior swimmer Eran Ber found a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:51.69) while sophomore Dylan Nasser (1:52.09) and junior Cameron Carney (1:54.30) took third and fourth for the Lopes.
Sophomore Alonso Carazo Barbero finished the final individual event, the 200 individual medley, in 1:54.13.
Up next, the Lopes have a three-week break before traveling to Houston for the WAC Championships on Feb. 26-29.

LAS VEGAS — The Grand Canyon women’s swimming and diving team lost 187-112 to UNLV on Saturday.
The Lopes began the meet placing second in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Briana Rittenbach, junior Marina McInelly, freshman Cece Mayer and sophomore Emily Muteti finished in 1 minute 45.61 seconds.
GCU freshman Kelsey Andrusak won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:24.51 and took second in the 500 freestyle in 2:17.92.
McInelly had a strong performance on the day with two first-place finishes and a second-place finish. She won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.83) and 200 breaststroke (2:17.92) and took second in the 200 individual medley (2:07.83). Lopes freshman Hallie Kolb finished in second behind McInelly in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.38).
The Lopes swept the top three places in both diving events. Freshman Sara Lameiro Castellanos won both with scores of 273.00 in the 1-meter dive and 314.45 in the 3-meter dive. In the 1-meter dive, junior Tasmin Stewart placed second (234.40) and freshman Ava Talorico took third (228.50). Talorico placed second in the 3-meter dive (231.15) and Stewart finished third (229.20).
Senior Salma Zaitoun swam the 100 freestyle in 46.84 seconds to claim second for GCU.
Up next, the Lopes have a three-week break before traveling to Houston for the WAC Championships on Feb. 26-29.

*Kicking off the first swimming event, Kacey Kiuchi, Skylar Moore, Kate Afanasteva, and Caitlyn Schreiber took first in the 200 medley with a time of 1:43.70. The team of Lindsay Swail, Annie Sanguansin, Teneka Ash, and Kristina Schneider placed third (1:47.05).
*Freshman Diana Neagu touched second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:30.34, sophomore Camila Quineche finished third (10:33.22).
*Junior Lauren Smith placed first in the 200 free (1:52.00), sophomore Filio Raftopoulou finished (1:52.40), and junior Camryn Wheals took third (1:53.86).
*Junior Kate Afanasyeva touched first in the 100 back with a swim of 54.93, sophomore Kacey Kiuchi placed second (56.43), and junior Lindsay Swail finished sixth (56.63).
*Sophomore Skylar Moore placed third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.67, sophomore Annie Sanguansin took fifth (1:07.01), and sophomore Gaby Tellez finished sixth (1:09.18).

*Junior Eva Kim touched first in the 50 free with a time of 23.44, junior Caitlyn Schreiber followed in second (23.80), and junior Kristina Schneider finished third (24.00).
*Junior Josauli Lacuesta placed fourth on 1 meter with a score of 226.90, senior Kourtney Clark followed in sixth (216.95).
*Schneider took first in the 100 free with a time of 52.24, Wheals came in third (52.91), and Schreiber finished in fourth (53.14).
*Kim touched first in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.07, Raftopoulou followed in second (2:03.51), and Swail took fourth (2:05.46).
*Moore placed second in the 200 breast (2:21.36), Sanguansin took fourth (2:25.53), Tellez finished fifth (2:25.79).
*Armijo touched first in the 500 free with a time of 5:00.70, Smith took third (5:08.81), and freshman Jacklyn Scheberies followed in fourth (5:09.25).
*Afanasyeva grabbed first in the 100 fly with a swim of 56.33, senior Tara Wise took second (57.80), and Ash placed fourth (58.22).
*Clark took fourth on 3 meter with a score of 227.70 and Lacuesta followed in fifth (223.40).
*Kiuchi touched first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.11, Armijo finsihed in third (2:07.45), and Raftopoulou followed in fourth (2:08.86).
*Closing out the meet, Afanasyeva, Schneider, Kim, and Schreiber took first in the 400 free relay (3:26.19), Swail, Kennedy Hood, Kiuchi, and Raftopoulou followed in second (3:30.60).
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
*The 200 medley relay team of Ogi Maric, Jack Binder, Bryan Chavez, and Richard Szilagyi touched first with a swim of 1:29.76. Panos Bolanos, Sean Gage, Casey McEuen, and Hayden Hemmens finished second (1:30.95).
*Freshman Cameron Castro placed first in the 1000 free with a time of 9:26.86, followed by sophomore Wyatt Marsalek in fourth (9:37.26).
*Freshman Ogi Maric touched first in the 200 free with a swim of 1:38.34, senior Hayden Hemmens grabbed second (1:39.04), and freshman Bryan Chavez took third (1:40.36).
*Junior Richard Szilagyi placed first in the 100 back with a time of 49.09, freshman Panos Bolanos followed in second (49.91).
*Sophomore Jack Binder touched first in the 100 breast with a time of 56.53, sophomore Sam Willstrop took second (56.60), and senior Dagen Kipling finished fifth(58.94).
*Sophomore Michal Cukanow placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.36, sophomore Bert Phung followed in second (1:53.11), and sophomore Michael Klauss took fourth (1:54.33).
*Junior Sean Gage touched second in the 50 free (20.95), sophomore Casey McEuen placed fifth (21.30), and freshman Steven Butler finished sixth (21.42).
*Junior Jesse Cawley took second on 1 meter with a score of 308.80.
*Szilagyi grabbed first in the 100 free with a time of 44.51, Butler finished in second (46.40), and freshman Jake Keller placed sixth (47.54).
*Bolanos touched first in the 200 back with a swim of 1:47.51, Klauss took fifth (1:58.59).
*Zukov took first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:04.02, Gage touched second (2:06.89), Binder placed third (2:07.31).
*Mykkanen touched first in the 500 free with a swim of 4:39.33, Hemmens finished second (4:34.34), and Castro took fourth (4:35.68).
*Chavez placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 49.69, Cukanow finished third (49.86), and Kariotis followed in fourth (50.57).
*Cawley took second on 3 meter with a score of 308.80.
*Maric finished first in the 200 IM (1:50.41), Gage placed third (1:54.72), and Zukov followed in fourth (1:54.86).
*Closing out the last event of the night, the 400 free relay team of Szilagyi, Hemmens, Chavez, and Bolanos touched first (3:00.83). The team of Mykkanen, Cukanow, Butler, and Maric followed in second (3:02.84).
