The University of Kansas Wins the 2014 Kansas Classic

This past weekend, the University of Kansas held the 2014 Kansas Classic. Participating teams include Iowa State, Northern Iowa, Nebraska – Omaha, and the Tabor College Bluejays. Here’s the recap of the weekend:

Friday Finals

In the 200 Freestyle Relay, the Iowa State quartet of Savanna Townsend, Sarah Deis, Maddie Rastall, and Amanda Paulson won first place in 1:35.33. Taking second was Kansas’s A relay, followed by the A relay from Northern Iowa. In the 500 Freestyle, Kansas’ Chelsie Miller took first in 4:55.16. In second was Karyle Clarete of Iowa State who finished in 4:57.56, chased by Lindsay Manning of Kansas in 5:01.22. Chelsie Miller also won the 200 IM in a time of 2:04.23. Iowa State’s Kasey Roberts and Sarah Deis claimed second and third place in 2:05.91 and 2:06.83, respectively.

Next up was the shortest event of the weekend. Amanda Paulson of Iowa State won the 50 Freestyle in a time of 23.52. Northern Iowa’s Molly Lembezeder claimed second place in a time of 23.79, followed by Yulduz Kuchkarova in 24.13. The last event of Friday night was the 400 Medley Relay. Kansas’s Yulduz Kuchkarova, Bryce Hinde, Deanna Marks, and Haley Molden finished first in a time of 3:48.78. Iowa State’s A relay took second in a time of 3:51.81, touching out the B relay (3:52.32).

Saturday Finals

The Saturday night finals session started out with the 200 Medley Relay. In first was Kansas’s Yulduz Kuckarova, Bryce Hinde, Deanna Marks, Hannah Driscoll, finishing in a time of 1:43.21. Trailing Kansas were Iowa State’s A and B relays in second and third place. Next up was the 400 IM, and Kansas’s Chelsie Miller took first in a time of 4:21.90. Madison Straight of Kansas took second place in 4:26.15, followed by Marissa Engel of Iowa State in 4:30.39. In the 100 Butterfly, Iowa State’s Amanda Paulson claimed first place in 56.64. Kansas’s Pia Pavlic took second with a time of 56.87, just behind Paulson.

The 200 Freestyle was once again a battle between Kansas and Iowa State to claim the top spots. Haley Molden of Kansas took first in 1:51.37, followed by Karyl Clarete of Iowa State in 1:51.59. Rounding out the top three spots was Allison Merecka of Kansas in 1:53.30. In the 100 Breaststroke, Kasey Roberts of Iowa State finished first in 1:05.12, beating out Bryce Hinde of Kansas (1:05.18) by just .06. Yulduz Kuchkarova finished first in 55.54, followed by Marissa Engel of Iowa State in 56.69 and Deanna Marks of Kansas in 57.12. The final event of the Saturday night session was the 800 Freestyle Relay. Kansas’s A relay of Haley Molden, Allison Merecka, Madison Straight, and Chelsie Miller placed first in a time of 7:30.62, followed by the Kansas B relay and the Iowa State A relay. Kansas’s A relay’s time of 7:30.62 was also a new meet record.

Sunday Finals

The final session of the Kansas Classic took place on Sunday night. Yulduz Kuchkarova started out the night with a win for Kansas in the 200 Backstroke in 2:00.72. Marissa Engel of Iowa State finished just behind Kuchkarova in 2:00.84, and Madison Straight, also of Iowa State, took third in 2:02.29.
Next up was the 200 Breaststroke. Iowa State claimed the top two spots: Kasey Roberts finished first in 2:20.00 followed by Danica Delaquis in 2:21.40. Bryce Hinde of Kansas claimed third place in 2:22.18.

Next, Kansas won first and second in the 200 Butterfly, as Chelsie Miller took the top spot in a time of 2:04.61 ahead of her teammate Deanna Marks in 2:06.26. Mary Kate Luddy of Iowa State swam a 2:07.59 to take third place. The final event of the session and of the meet was the 400 Freestyle Relay. Kansas took first by almost three seconds, with Haley Molden, Hannah Driscoll, Yulduz Kuchkarova, and Deanna Marks teaming up to finish in 3:28.66. Iowa State’s A relay placed second, and Kansas’s B team claimed third.

Tabor College? Are they now under “double secret probation” for finishing in last place at the meet?

Dean Wormer and Neidermeyer must be very angry!
