The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs both swept their counterparts from Florida Atlantic as the women defeated the Owls 168-111 and the men turned in a 168-124 victory on Saturday afternoon to close out Denver’s winter training trip. Denver’s men’s and women’s swimmers combined for 27 of 28 event wins in the dual meet. 

“I thought that we swam very well today,” head coach Brian Schrader said. “We were able to show our depth throughout the competition, and I was impressed with how that depth performed. I want to thank our seniors for a great winter preseason trip. We got a lot accomplished in Florida this week, and we look forward to getting back in the competition pool in Utah after the New Year.”

Denver opened the meet with wins in the women’s and men’s 100 yard medley relay. Sophomore Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.), seniors Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) and Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany) and junior Morgan Wice-Roslin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) combined to win the women’s race with a time of 49.36. DU’s women’s B-relay out-touched the FAU A relay by 0.07 seconds to take 15 of the 17 points in the race.

Denver’s men’s quartet of junior Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Ore.), senior Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia), junior Ben Ussery (Austin, Texas) and freshman Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) finished 0.21 seconds ahead of FAU with a time of 42.49 to win the first men’s race of the afternoon.

In the third event, the Pioneers finished 1-2-3 in the women’s 200 freestyle as sophomore Annelyse Tullier (Dallas, Texas), Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and junior Grace Sommerville (Ashburton, New Zealand) out-touched the Owls for 16 of the 19 points in the race.

DU’s men took the top five spots in the same race with juniors Ray Bornman (Mackay, Queensland) and Jared Smith (Boulder City, Nev.), freshman Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas), junior Alex Walton (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Colin Orlowski (Allentown, N.Y.) finishing in the 1-5 spots, respectively.

Junior Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.) led the Pioneers in the 50 yard backstroke, touching first at 27.15, while junior Connor Gillespie (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Trey Kilbride (Austin, Texas) ended up 1-2 on the men’s side at times of 24.57 and 25.00.

Denver took the top two spots in the women’s 50 breast and the top three spots in the men’s 50 breast to add to the separation between the two teams on the scoreboard. Roas (29.92) and senior Nicole Cassou (Castle Rock, Colo.) (32.03) led the Denver women and the Pioneers men got scoring performances from senior Patrick Guillory (Meadows Place, Texas) (26.57), senior Ben Severino (Des Moines, Iowa) (26.91) and redshirt-senior Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.) (27.36).

The Pioneers’ women finished in six of the top seven places of the 100 yard butterfly led by junior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) (56.81), freshman Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) (59.62) and junior Maddie Myers (Arvada, Colo.) (59.80) who scored for Denver. On the men’s side, Denver grabbed the top five places with scoring swims from redshirt-senior Andrew Torres (Arvada, Colo.) (50.22), Loncar (50.67) and Ussery (51.45).

Bradley picked up her second win in as many women’s races, touching first in the 50 yard free with a time of 24.65, while the Denver men took the top four spots led by scoring times from freshman Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.)(20.83), Sykes (21.76) and senior Luke Williams (Scottsdale, Ariz.)(22.18).

At the first swimming break of the afternoon, freshman Sammy Walker (Los Gatos, Calif.) earned four meet points with a diving score of 235.95 and sophomore Jackson Martin (Boulder, Colo.) led Denver in the five-diver field with a score of 255.60.

Swimming action in Florida resumed with the 200 free relay, a women’s event the Pioneers won with a time of 1:38.86. Moden, Wice-Roslin, Bradley and freshman Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) combined for the second Denver women relay win of the day.

Moden made it back-to-back women’s wins with a victory in the 100 free, touching in 53.98. Denver’s men went 1-4 in the 100 free as Wachtler (47.43), Farber (48.34), freshman Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) (48.72) and senior Marco Russo (La Mesa, Calif.) (49.09) outswam FAU.

Shifting to the backstroke, Tullier picked up another event win with a time of 59.29. Smith won the men’s 100 back finishing 1.21 seconds ahead of his teammate Gillespie.

Sophomore Bailey Andison (Smiths Falls, Ontario) and Guillory out-touched their respective fields in the 100 breast to lead the Pioneers in events 21 and 22.

In the only distance race of the afternoon, Sommerville (5:04.16) and Roas (5:06.42) finished 1-2 in the women’s 500 free to lead Denver, while freshman Jesse Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) won the men’s race with a time of 4:49.31.

Bradley’s third event win came in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.21 and freshman Peter Webster (Odense, Denmark) clocked in at 22.73 for his first win in the men’s 50 butterfly.

At the second swimming break, Walker won the 3-meter dive, scoring 242.85. Sophomore Ryan Reed (Springdale, Ark.) led the Denver men in the 3-meter with a score of 246.97.

McCormick and Myers touched 1-2 in the 29th event of the day, winning the women’s 100 IM with a time of 58.82 and 1:00.90, respectively. Denver’s men had the top five times in the men’s 100 IM led by Cottam (52.12), Severino (52.58) and senior Travis Greenwald (Wilton, Iowa) (54.66).

The Pioneer women’s 400 medley relay teams took the top two spots. Andison, Myers, Sanders and sophomore Courtney Laird (Overland Park, Kan.) turned in a time of 4:03.39, a B-relay that out-swam Denver’s A-relay in a competitive race. On the men’s side, Denver also took the top-two spots with the Pioneers’ A-relay quartet of Robrock, Wachtler, Severino and sophomore Kyle Ewoldt (Gilbert, Ariz.) touched in 3:33.93 to wrap-up the races on Saturday.

The Pioneers are back in action together with a trip to Salt Lake City to take on Utah and Harvard on January 7, an event set to start at 11 a.m. MT. Denver’s diving programs will host Harvard on January 4th at El Pomar.
