UK, Canada Announce Commonwealth Games Rosters

Both England and Canada have announced their rosters for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Dehli, India. Note that each part of the United Kingdom, including Scotland and Wales, competes separately from England at the Games.

England

There are no big surprises here. The UK will be led by their unbelieveable backstroke crew comprised of Liam Tancock, Elizabeth Simmonds, and Gemma Spofforth; middle-distance freestyle stars Rebecca Adlington and Jo Jackson; and sprinter Simon Burnett. Spofforth, Addlington, and Jackson are all world record holders.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Great Britain won 23 swimming medals, including 8 golds. There, Burnett set a Commonwealth Games record in the 100 freestyle at 48.57, as did Liam Tancock in the 100 back at 54.53.

Canada

The 2010 Canadian roster is full of swimmers that fly under the radar on the international scene. This includes Brent Hayden, who currently sits behind Nathan Adrian and Michael Phelps as the third fastest 100 freestyler in the world this year, and Ryan Cochrane, who won gold in both the 800 and 1500m freestyles at the Pan Pac Games. Anchoring the women’s side will be Annamay Pierse, who is the world record holder in the 200 breaststroke, and a very deep group of freestylers who should take some relay medals. Julia Wilkinson, the defending NCAA 100 free champ who also finished 4th in the 200 IM at the 2010 Pan Pacs, is a name that might be familiar in the US.

At the 2006 event, Canada won 16 medals, with the lone gold going to Mike Brown in the 200 breast. Brown is  not on this year’s squad. Andrew Hurd, who won two silvers in 2006 in the 400m and 1500m freestyles, is also not on this year’s squad.
