Mason Tittle, a sophomore at UCSB, won the 50 free on the first night of the 2016 A3 Invitational with a quick 19.91. Tittle was the only competitor to break the 20-second mark, finishing well ahead of his teammate Yoessef Tibazi (20.42). The sophomore Tittle also split a 19.71 on UCSB’s victorious 200 free relay and anchored their 400 medley relay with a 43.72, which finished first by almost four full seconds.

The Hawai’i women had a very strong showing in the first day of competition. In the 200 IM, German-born Franziska Weidner blasted a lifetime best 1:57.92, coming within hundredths of the legendary pool record held by Olympian Tracy Caulkins, set back in 1979. Meanwhile, Bryndis Hansen popped a 22.50 to win the women’s 50 free. Hansen is a transfer to Hawai’i from Nova Southeastern, where she set the NCAA Division II record (22.53) two years ago.

Weidner and Hansen were stellar on relays as well. Weidner (22.90) led off their 200 free relay with Hansen (22.60) following, as Hawai’i would finish in a close 2nd to UCLA. Linnea Mack split a blazing 21.94 on UCLA’s winning relay, and returned for a field-best 53.00 in leading off the Bruins’ 400 medley relay. Hansen mustered a 53.75 fly split for Hawai’i, while Weidner anchored them with a 48.77.

San Diego State freshman Mckenna Meyer notched a lifetime best in the 500 free (4:46.62) for the win there. In the men’s race, UCSB’s Logan Hotchkiss dipped under 4:20 for a time of 4:19.84. Also picking up a win was Hawai’i’s Metin Aydin, who shot out to a 47.97 at the halfway mark and closed for a 1:45.74.
