Two Sudden Death Contests Highlight Week 3 Women’s Water Polo Results

Week 3 of the collegiate women’s water polo season included 61 games, 21 contests between ranked teams and five Top 10 affairs.

The weekend brought two upsets and three overtime games, including two which went to sudden death. It took eight periods, including two overtimes and two sudden death stanzas for #21 Cal State Northridge to stave off RV Cal Baptist 11-10 as Katia Andon-Mateos punched in the game winner.

Upsets

  • Sonoma State def. #25 Azusa Pacific 10-9 – The Cougars boasted a 4-1 lead in the opening stanza, but the Seawolves charged back to grab a 5-4 advantage with 7:31 to play in the third quarter. The teams traded goals tying at 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 before Annika Erickson put in the game winner to secure the upset for Sonoma State with 2:43 to go in the game. Erickson netted four goals, while Cassidy Mundt logged a hat trick. Kyra Kahahawai and Hannah Bradley put in two goals apiece for Azusa Pacific.
  • #11 UC Davis def. #7 Michigan 11-6 – The Wolverines scored the opening goal of the game, but the Aggies countered with three in a row.  After a tie at 3, Allyson Clague (2:32, 2nd), Julia Hartmann (:19, 2nd) and Emily Byrne (6:46, 3rd) helped UC Davis pull away again. The lead stood at 8-5 heading into the final eight minutes. The teams traded goals to start the fourth quarter before Abbey Pfefferlen (penalty, 2:19) and Hartmann (:39) iced the win for the Aggies. Byrne logged a hat trick for the Aggies, while Ava Morrant paced Michigan with three scores.

Overtime

  • #21 Cal State Northridge def. RV Cal Baptist 11-10 2SD – The Matadors led 7-4 after three periods, but the Lancers outdid them 5-2 in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Both teams scored once in the second overtime period, bringing on sudden death. After a scoreless seventh stanza, Cal State Northridge claimed the victory as Katia Andon-Mateos finished off a hat trick with 1:51 to play in the second sudden death period. Kylee Jansen also scored three times for CSUN, while Jamie Hutton and Kira O’Donnell put in three apiece for Cal Baptist.
  • #25 Azusa Pacific def. Cal State East Bay 8-7 OT – After falling behind 4-1 in the first quarter, Azusa Pacific rallied to take a 6-4 lead after three quarters. Goals by Auriel Bill and Adrien Van Dyke tied it up at 6-all with 5:56 to play. Miereia Tutusaus Alcaraz (2:52) put APU on top only to see Tahnee Trew level the score with 27 ticks left in regulation. Gabrielle Martinez scored the eventual game winner with 57 second to go in the first overtime period. The teams combined for seven shots from there but came up empty. Milena Guzman Ortiz led APU with three goals, while Bill logged a hat trick for East Bay.
  • La Verne def. Fresno Pacific 13-12 SD – The Leopards led 5-4 at the half, but Fresno Pacific outscored them 8-7 in the second half, including 4-3 in the final stanza to force overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, Jassmine Kezman converted a power play opportunity with 2:27 to play in the first sudden death period. It was Kezman’s fourth goal of the day, to go with a hat trick by Nancy Trinh. Sam Witt put in four goals for Fresno Pacific.
