Top Relay Finish Puts Empire Women on Top After Day 1 Futures (OH)

2017 USA Swimming Futures Championship

DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS

Tonight was the start of all four USA Swimming Futures Championships. Distance events and the 800 free relay kicked things off.

Rising junior at the University of Pittsburgh, Meghan Joram touched first in the 800 free to kick things off. She dropped over 10 seconds from her seed time, touching in 8:53.05

On the men’s side, 16-year-old Daniel Berlitz dropped 24-plus seconds to finish with the top time at 15:57.31, the only swimmer under the 16 minute mark.

Both men’s and women’s finals for the 800 free relay competed tonight as the last events of the session, On the women’s side the Empire Swimming relay team was anchored by the two Panitz sisters, Georgia and Josephine. Kate Amar and Madison Hartigan were also a part of the top relay team that finished in 8:31.36.

Another pair of siblings capped off the men’s relays as Caleb and Jacob Tuckerman helped the Hudson Explorer Aquatic relay team finish off the night with a first place finish in the relay, blowing away the field by just under 3 seconds and clocking in at 7:49.85. They were accompanied by teammates Jay Johnson and Tyler Doerrer.
