Top-Flight Recruit Hanna House Makes Duke Debut on Saturday

Hanna House, a top-tier recruit coming out of the high school class of 2014, made her Duke debut on Saturday in the team’s tri meet against Harvard and South Carolina.

House, who is a product of the Carmel Swim Club in Indiana, came out of high school as a 23.7/51.6 sprint freestyler and a 54.1/1:58 backstroker, was one of the reasons that we ranked Duke as the #12 recruiting class in 2014. Duke has not responded to a request for comment on why House missed the first semester.

House swam in four races in her first collegiate meet, leading off Duke’s “B” medley relay in 26.67, placing 3rd in the 100 yard backstroke in 56.83, placing 7th in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.41, and leading-off their 400 free relay in 54.31.

House originally verbally committed to the Virginia Cavaliers during her senior season, then later de-committed and signed with Notre Dame. After that, she “re-explored” her options and “fell in love with Duke.” She was granted a release from Notre Dame to transfer to their intra-conference ACC opponents at Duke.

If House were able to get back to her full-form by the end of the season, she would have a shot at earning a spot on Duke’s relays at the ACC Championships. Their top backstroke so far this year, Jessica Sutherland, was a 54.20 at the Nike Cup Invitational in November.

Duke’s four fastest 100 freestylers so far this season are Leah Goldman (50.24), Maddie Rusch (50.38), Chelsea Ye (50.61), and Kathryn Eckhart (51.17). All are underclassmen.

Just like in high school, she’s a flip flopper

Just to set the record staright, she first committed to Notre Dame, not UVA. Additionally, she quit the team which is why she didn’t swim first semester.

I remember her coming as a recruit. What really happened was she verbally committed to Notre Dame and soon after changed her mind and verballed to UVA. Then things didn’t work out for some reason with UVA and ended up signing with Notre Dame. Then at some point after the signing date realized she didn’t want Notre dame after all and went to duke. Very confusing process but glad she ended up somewhere that makes her happy!!

I’ve watched this girl swim for years, there is no doubt Hanna will be back in full form and will represent herself well at ACC’s.
