Brazil’s Guilherme Costa shatters Brazlian & South American Records in prelims of the 800 free

Brazilian 22-year-old Guilherme Costa had his best swim of the meet so far in the men’s 800 free prelims. Costa got on the pace early, leading his heat through the majority of the race. His efforts got him to a 7:46.09 finish, which was good for 5th overall, and new Brazilian and South American Records.

In the final, Costa will have a shot at earning Brazil’s, and South America’s, 2nd swimming medal of these Games.

  • Brazilian 30-year-old Leonardo de Deus finished 6th in the men’s 200 fly, swimming a 1:55.19. De Deus was the #2 seed heading into finals, but was just slightly off his semifinals time. This was de Deus’ first Olympic final, after he missed qualifying for semifinals in 2012, and made semifinals in 2016, but missed qualifying for the final.
  • Brazil qualified for the final of the men’s 4×200 free relay, finishing 8th in finals. Marcelo Chierighini anchored the squad in a speedy 47.72.
  • Colombian Record-holder Jorge Murillo finished 30th in the men’s 200 breaststroke.
  • Venezuela’s Alfonso Mestre took 15th in prelims of the men’s 800 free – 7:52.07
