Today in Swimming History: November 16, 2000 – Perkins Retires

On November 16th, 2000, one of the great distance swimmers to ever enter the pool, Australia’s Kieren Perkins, announced his retirement.

Perkins won back-to-back gold medals in the 1500 free at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics before slipping back to silver in 2000, where he’d hand off to Grant Hackett as the next in the line of legendary Aussie distance swimmers. His retirement was sort of an appropriate hand-off to the next generation, though some were surprised when he swam on after Atlanta.
