Ohio State redshirt senior Tim Phillips will swim for the Buckeyes as a senior, though you won’t see him in the scarlet & gray in the fall semester.
Settling any rumors about what Phillips’ plan would be for his senior year, Ohio State men’s coach Bill Wadley told SwimSwam today that Phillips would be doing an internship in the fall in Charlotte for school and returning in December for the rest of his senior season.
Phillips redshirted the 2011-2012 season to train with SwimMAC Carolina in the run-up to the London Olympics, though he ultimately failed to qualify for the Olympic Team. Phillips returned to train with SwimMAC, based in Charlotte, this summer, and this internship should allow him to fulfill that internship experience while still getting elite-level training from a coaching staff that he is familiar with.
The Buckeyes were 12th at last year’s NCAA Championship meet, and return 17 Big Ten Championship point scorers. With Phillips return confirmed, they will be losing Jason Schnur, Zach Holmes, and Zach Birnbrich from last year’s roster, which accounts for 8 NCAA relay swims (out of 20).
Phillips finished 2nd at the Big Ten Championships in the 100 fly, and ended up 8th at the 2013 NCAA Championships in the same event. He set the Ohio State school record at Big Tens as well, and was also a member of the 2012-2013 USA Swimming National Team.
He is a second-generation Buckeye, born in Germany, whose father swam for Ohio State as well.

Good for Tim., having a growing group of post grads to train with should make for a good atmosphere.I hope he finishes up his NCAA career with bang.
