Thomson Impresses, Stanford Sweeps D3 UC Santa Cruz In Sprint Meet

6 different Stanford Cardinal men won events to power a season-opening sweep of Division III UC-Santa Cruz Friday night.

Danny Thomson was the only one of those 6 to only win one individual event, but his win was impressive enough to make up for it. Thomson went 4:25.84 to take the 500 free, a time that sits 4th in the NCAA this year.

The meet’s sprint format featured 50s and 100s of each stroke, plus the 200 and 500 free and a 200 IM.

Junior Max Williamson had two solid swims, winning the 200 IM and 200 free. Williamson was 1:48.44 to easily pace the IM, and won the 200 free late in 1:38.49.

Sophomores Sam Perry and Patrick Conaton each doubled, Perry taking the sprint frees and Conaton the backstrokes. Perry was 44.61 in the 100, his best swim of the night, and also went 20.50 in the 50 free.

Conaton was a solid 23.14 to win the 50 back in the closest touchout of the night. Freshman Ryan Dudzinski was second in 23.15. Conaton also win the 100 back with a 49.69.

Also sweeping strokes were Connor Black (22.03 and 48.45 in the 50 and 100 flys) and Christian Brown (25.85 and 56.39 in the 50 and 100 breasts).

Some of UC-Santa Cruz’s top finishes came from freshmen in a solid showing for the team’s underclassmen. Freshman Christian Leon was 5th in the 50 free at 22.69, and sophomore Kyle Rovira took 5th in the 50 fly at 24.59.
