Thomas Surprised Herself Winning the 100 Butterfly (Video)

Alys Thomas finished second in the 200 butterfly hitting the wall just five one-hundredths of a second behind Aimee Willmott. Willmott won the event in a time of 2:08.52 with Thomas hitting the wall in a time of 2:08.87.

Thomas told British Swimming that she was surprised that she was able to pull out the win in the 100 butterfly as she is more of a 200 specialist.

WOMEN’S 100 BUTTERFLY – FINALS

  • British Record – 57.25, Ellen Gandy (2012)
  • 1st Place OLY Standard – 57.44
  • 2% Consideration – 57.71

Alys Thomas came into the competition with a lifetime best of 59.01 and improved on that in the prelims and once again in the finals. Thomas took the women’s 100 butterfly in a time of 58.66. She missed the Olympic qualifying standard of 57.44 by over a second.

Rachael Kelly, who swam this event at the 2015 World Championships, finished second in a time of 58.72. Kelly was not able to match her prelims time of 58.46.

Jemma Lowe, who also swam this event in Kazan, collected the bronze in a time of 58.89.
