Tanzania to Send Three Swimmers to 2015 FINA World Championships

The Tanzania Swimming Association has named a roster of three swimmers set to attend the 2015 FINA World Aquatics Championships, according to local media.

Hilal Hilal, Ammaar Ghadiyali, and Magdalene Mushi will represent the country in Kazan, Russia in late July. For Ghadiyali, this is at least his 3rd appearance at FINA’s premier non-Olympic event. Hilal also represented the country in 2013, and Moshi represented the country in 2011.

The 17-year old Ghadiyali competed at the 2011 event just after his 14th birthday, finishing 103rd and 99th, respectively, in the 50 and 100 meter freestyles. In 2013, that improved to 78th in the 100 free and 69th in the 200 free. 69th in the 200 free made him the last place finisher.

At that meet, he timed 59.96 and 2:15.28, respectively, in those events, but by last year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he had improved those times to 57.50 and 2:08.94 to shatter the National Records in the events. If his improvements continue, Ghadiyali should continue to climb up the rankings at this year’s meet.

The 19-year old Hilal is a pure sprinter who holds the National Records in the 50 free (25.24), 50 back (30.11), and 50 fly (27.28).

Moshi is a relative veteran at 24-years old and finished 45th in the 100 free at the 2012 Olympic Games, though after skipping the 2013 World Championships, her times slid at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Ghadiyali and Moshi both swam at the 2012 Olympics, making up one-third of Tanzania’s total Olympic team across all sports of 6. The glaring absence on this year’s roster is Mariam Foum, who was the country’s highest women’s finisher (33rd in the 50 breast) last year in Glasgow.
