Tanja Kylliainen With Extremely Fast 400 IM On Day Two Finals of Louisville Cardinal Invite

Day two of the Louisville Invitational held at the Ralph Write Natatorium kicked off today following a very eventful first day of swimming which had both the Cardinal men and Cardinal women ranked first overall.

The 200 medley relay was the first event, and it paved way for another Louisville win. Tanja Kylliainen led off the relay in 25.51 followed by a 28.38 from Lucy Kramer. Kelsi Worrell made the difference in the relay splitting a 22.94, the fastest split of the evening, on the fly leg and taking the lead for Louisville over Western Kentucky. Freestyle anchor Andrea Kneppers kept that lead as Louisville won in 1:39.55 over Western Kentucky’s 1:40.18. Kentucky’s efforts were much due to a quick 24.83 backstroke split done by Nadine Laemmler.

Louisville also won the men’s 200 medley relay coming extremely close to the pool record of 1:26.21 in the process. The Louisville men threw down a 1:26.30, beating Western Kentucky by a sizable margin as they touched in at 1:29.55 to take the silver. Grigory Tarasevich who has already showed some impressive results this season rocked a 22.22 leadoff and the rest was history with the remainder of his teammates extending on his lead for the entirety of the race.

Tanja Kylliainen won the first individual event, the women’s 400 IM, with a swift 4:07.88. She was well ahead of her competition in prelims and proved to do the same tonight as her teammate Abby Chin finished second just over seven seconds behind in 4:15.03. That time for Kyllainen beat her previous season best of 4:10.89. Allie Duff of Western Kentucky was third in 4:16.81.

Nolan Tesone of Louisville made it four Louisville wins in a row on night two as he trudged to a 3:47.97 victory in the 400 IM over Uvis Kalnins of Missouri State. Kalnins finished second in 3:48.45 followed by Miguel Davila, also of Missouri State in 3:56.43.

Kelsi Worrell of Louisville posted a very quick 52.09 to come extremely close to the pool record of 51.73 set b Marne Erasmus in February of 2014. Tanja Kylliainen took silver in her second race of the night, clocking in at 53.06. Third was Hannah Musser from Western Kentucky in 54.30.

Pedro Coutinho won another event for Louisville, taking gold in the 100 fly final. Coutinho sported an NCAA ‘B’ time in the process touching in at 47.08 over teammate Aaron Young’s 47.54. Josh Quallen rounded out the top three with a 47.76.

Andrea Kneppers of Louisville took the women’s 200 yard freestyle final with a time of 1:47.10. That time beat Western Kentucky’s Michelle Craddock by over a second and a half as she touched in for second in 1:48.49. Alex Sellers of Louisville threw down a 1:50.28 to grab the third spot.

Till Pallmann of Southern Illinois broke Louisville’s streak of winning every event of the night as he touched first in the 200 freestyle ahead of Louisville’s Matthias Lindenbauer. Pallmann cracked a 1:37.10 to win the event with Lindenbauer almost a full second behind him in 1:38.05. Backstroker Grigory Tarasevich touched in for the bronze at 1:38.24.

The women’s 100 breaststroke final went to Claire Conlon, a senior at Western Kentucky, in a time of 1:01.86. Lucy Kramer of Lousville was second in 1:02.76 followed by Whitney Spain of Western Kentucky in 1:03.71.

Louisville came back with another win as Thomas Dahlia cranked a 53.18 in the 100 breaststroke to win the event. That time would’ve been the fastest in the nation heading into this weekend, however following the Minneapolis Grand Prix others have been under that mark. Fabian Schwingenschlogl finished second behind Dahlia in 54.05.

Coming in hot in the women’s 100 yard backstroke was Nadine Laemmler, the swimmer who led off the Western Kentucky 200 medley relay, as she won the 100 backstroke in 53.38. Not far behind her was Hannah Magnuson of Louisville who put up a 53.99 to finish second. Allie Duff was third in 54.87.

Paul Le who had a second place finish in the 200 IM on Friday night came home with big W as he touched in at 48.07 to win the 100 backstroke final. Behind Le was Aaron Greene in 48.51 and Josh Quallen in 48.85.

Cheri Zhang of Southern Illinois set a new pool record in the women’s 1 meter diving event this morning, garnering up a total of 338.30 points to break the previous record of 3:29.95. This evening she broke the record again with 3:58.30 points. Southern Illinois made it a 1-2 finish in the event as Esther Chen racked up 305.50 points to finish second.

The Louisville women made it two for two in relays tonight as they won the 800 free relay in 7:12.27. That time beat Western Kentucky by a considerable amount as they touched in at 7:20.53 for second place. Finishing third was Southern Illinois University with a time of 7:26.10.

The Louisville men followed suit and came up with another relay win. Trevor Carroll led off the relay with a 1:36.49 to put up the fastest split of the evening and lead the team to a 6:31.59 victory over Missouri State.
