SwimSwam’s The Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 6/4/2014

There was fast swimming all over the country during the weekend of May 30-June 2. Here are our picks for the Daring Dozen of the week:

Yahshua Garcia, 12, Unattached: 100m free (59.29) – Garcia dipped under the 1:00 mark for the first time at the Maryland State LC Meet hosted by Rockville Montgomery Swim Club. He won the boys 11-12 50/100/200 free and 200 IM, achieving best times in all but the first event. He also took home new PBs in the 100 breast and 50 fly.

Jonah Park, 13, Lane Four Aquatics: 400m free (4:28.69) – Park knocked 17 seconds off his best 400 at Cedar Rapids Aquatics Association’s Summer Long Course Kick-Off. He came away from the meet with best times in the 200/400 free, 100/200 back, and 100 fly.

Lleyton Plattel, 11, Pleasanton Seahawks: 800m free (9:55.68) – At the Seahawks’ Long Course Senior II Meet, Plattel went within 2/100 of his best time, achieved at the Ellis Aquatics Distance Meet on May 4. He did, however, pick up new times in the 400 free, 100/200 back, and 200 fly.

Ryan Hogan, 11, SOLO Aquatics: 1500m free (19:30.56) – In his first “at bat” in the mile, Hogan belted out a 19:30.56 at the North Shore Swim Club Distance & Specialty Meet at Hanscom Air Force to wind up eighth in the country for 11-year-old boys so far this season.

Cole Junker, 13, Flyers Aquatic Swim Team: 100m back (1:04.09) – At theMeet Me in St. Louis Meet hosted by Rec-Plex Sharks Swim Team, Junker shaved another .08 off his best time, which he’d just gotten two weeks ago. That’s three swims, three best times so far this season. Junker won the boys 13-14 100 free, 100/200 back, and notched best times in the 100/200 free, 100 back, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM.

Kaylyn Schoof, 11, Schroeder YMCA Swim Team: 200m back (2:34.04) – Schoof went her second-fastest time (missing her PB by .02) at the Summer Classic hosted by YMCA at Pabst Farms in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. She is still 5 seconds ahead of where she was last year at this time, and the fourth-fastest 11-year-old girl in the country this season.

Lindsey Horejsi, 16, Atlantis Swimming Federation: 100m breast (1:11.36) – Horejsi swam her fastest 100 breast by .60, and was nearly two seconds faster than her season-best from last summer at the 2014 Twin Cities Swim Team Jump Into June Meet. Horejsi also picked up new times in the 50/200 free, 200 breast, and 200 IM.

Maciej Olszewski, 17, NASA Wildcat Aquatics : 200m breast (2:23.92) – Swimming at Patriot Aquatic Club’s Memorial Day Melée, Olszewski came within .28 of his lifetime best in the 200 breast from the 2013 Polish Junior Nationals. He was ten seconds faster than he had been at this same meet last year.

Andrew Dai, 11, Wheaton Swim Club: 100m fly (1:07.98) – At the Patriot Aquatic Club Memorial Day Melée Dai dropped two full seconds from his seed time, which was only 20 days old. That makes him the number one 11-year-old in the country this season in the 100 fly.

Dillon Hong, 13, Kingfish Aquatic Club of Waterford: 200m fly (2:17.27) – Hong was just off his best time but still more than 20 seconds faster than a year ago in the 200 fly at the Summerfest Swim Meet hosted by Club Wolverine Swimming. He did go home with new PBs in the 100 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 400 IM.

Amy Tang, 11, Pacific Dragons Swim Team: 200m IM (2:37.89) – Swimming at the Valley Aquatics Summer Sprints meet at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center, Tang dropped five seconds from her seed time and finished third in both the mixed 11-12 200 IM and the mixed 11-12 200 free.

Cameron Mykkanen, 11, Irvine Novaquatics: 400m IM (5:35.39) – Mykkanen dropped a whopping 20 seconds in the 400 IM at the Golden West Swim Club “BR” LC Age Group Meet. Mykkanen also swam to personal bests in the 100/200/400 free, 100 back, and 50/100 breast.

Special thanks to Lyle Campbell for his assistance in putting this list together.
