SwimSwam’s The Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 2/5/2014

There weren’t a ton of meets this weekend, but the ones that took place were fast. Here are the Daring Dozen:

Corben Miles, 15, Patriot Swim Club: 50 free – Swimming for Acton-Boxboro, Miles won the 50 free at the Dual County League Championship Meet in Lincoln Sudbury, MA. His time was .01 off his lifetime best and about 1.2 seconds faster than where he was a year ago.

Alexandra Meyers, 17, Schroeder YMCA Swim Team: 100 free (50.14) – Meyers won the 100 and 200 free at the 33rd Annual Schroeder A+ Swim Meet. Just 3/10 off her best time, Meyers had the second-fastest 100 free in country this week.

Jordan Stout, 16, Rockwood Swim Club: 200 free (1:46.46) – Stout won the 200 free at Columbia Swim Club’s Tiger Invitational. It was her best time by more than a second and 4 seconds faster than year ago. Stout swam the fastest time in country this week, even with all those college meets in the database.

Chase Travis, 11, Delaware Swim Team: 500 free (5:08.13) – Travis won the girls’ 11-12 500 free at 2014 USA Swimming IM Xtreme Games Hosted by Potomac Marlins. Travis picked up best times in the 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

Jac Cortright, 16, NOVA of Virginia Aquatics: 1000 free (9:40.10) – Cortright dropped 15 seconds from his seed time and won the 1000 at the NOVA BB+ Bonanza. Cortright produced the seventh-fastest 1000 in the country this week.

Peter Larson, 12, Edina Swim Club: 100 back (55.75) – At the Schroeder A+ Swim Meet, Larson led off the Edina boys’ 11-12 400 medley relay in 55.73, which was a half second faster than his winning time in the 100 back. Larson also won the boys’ 11-12 100/200/500 free, and 200 IM.

Ashlyn Schoof, 15, Schroeder YMCA Swim Team (1:57.55) – Schoof won the women’s 200 back at the Schroeder A+ Swim Meet by over 3 seconds. It was her second-fastest showing in the event and the fastest 200 back in the country for the week.

Kaitlyn Dobler, 11, The Dolphins: 200 breast (2:30.90) – Dobler won the girls’ 11-12 100 and 200 breast at the 2014 OR Winter Qualifier hosted by Tigard Tualatin Swim Club. Dobler first swam the 200 in the fall and has gotten progressively faster each time she has competed, culminating in this 17-second improvement from her first race in October 2013.

Nolan Fergus, 12, Kishwaukee YMCA Dekalb County: 100 fly (55.09) – Fergus won the boys’ 11-12 50 free, 50/100 back, 100 breast, and 50/100 fly at the Claire Statton Memorial Invitational presented by TOPS YMCA Swim Team. At the end of last January Fergus was doing about a 1:03-1:04 in the 100 fly.

Anthony Minickiello, 12, KYD Swim Team: 200 fly (2:05.27) – Swimming at CCSC’s Down to the Wire Qualifier, Minickiello won the boys’ 50/100/500 free, 50 back, 200 breast, 50/200 fly, and 100/200/400 IM. His 200 fly was a best time and 10 seconds faster than where he was last winter.

John Shelstad, 14, Minnetonka Swim Club: 200 IM (1:57.15) – Shelstad finished second to Michael Andrew in the 200 IM at the Schroeder A+ Swim Meet with a best time that was three seconds faster than his seed time. He also won the 200 breast and 100 fly, and came in third behind Michael Andrew and Daniel Krueger in the 50/100/200 free.

Jake Johnson, 13, Delaware Swim Team: 400 IM (4:15.20) – Johnson picked up five best times in six events at the IM Xtreme Games Hosted by Potomac Marlins. He won the boys’ 13-14 200 back and was third in the 400 IM. Last January he was a 4:36 400 IMer.
