SwimSwam Pulse: 65% Pick NC State Men To Place Higher Than NC State Women

SwimSwam Pulse is a recurring feature tracking and analyzing the results of our periodic A3 Performance Polls. You can cast your vote in our newest poll on the SwimSwam homepage, about halfway down the page on the right side, or you can find the poll embedded at the bottom of this post.

Our most recent poll asked SwimSwam readers which NC State program would finish higher at NCAAs this season:

RESULTS

Question: Who will place higher at NCAAs in 2020?

  • NC State Men – 64.8%
  • NC State Women – 35.2%

Almost two thirds of voters still expected the NC State men to outplace the NC State women this season at NCAAs.

The Wolfpack men and women came in 4th in our College Swimming Previews series. (Shameless plug here). The Wolfpack men have been 4th for the past four years at NCAAs, but also lost a significant group to graduation. The Wolfpack women, meanwhile, return most of their key scorers after taking 7th last year, and look like real contenders to rise into the top 5.

The NC State women haven’t outplaced the men, though, since 2012. That was Braden Holloway‘s first year heading both programs, and the Wolfpack women were 34th, getting 12 points from one scoring diver, while the men didn’t score at all. Since then, the men have outplaced the women each year:

Women’s NCAA Finish Men’s NCAA Finish
2012 34th
2013 37th 15th
2014 16th 13th
2015 17th 8th
2016 9th 4th
2017 7th 4th
2018 18th 4th
2019 7th 4th

So that means that people think the women will finish worse than 4th I guess since the men get 4th by default now (it seems).
