SwimMAC’s Gracyn Pires Commits to Birmingham Southern for 2021-22

Gracyn Pires from Charlotte, North Carolina has committed to swim at Birmingham Southern College in the class of 2025.

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Birmingham Southern. I felt right at home with the team and coaches and look forward to contributing to a Nationally Ranked program. Thank you to my family, coaches, and friends who have helped me along the way. Go Panthers!”

Pires is a senior at Ardrey Kell High School. She swims year-round at SwimMAC Carolina under coach Brian Cattaneo and specializes in sprint free and backstroke.

She bookended 2020 with lifetime best performances in freestyle at the 2020 TEAM Western Open in January, in backstroke at the 2020 North Carolina Short Course Senior Championships in February, and in the 500 free, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM at the end of the year.

Pires swam her top 3 events at this year’s North Carolina Short Course Senior Champs, earning second-best times in the 50/100 free and coming with 1.5 seconds of her best time in the 100 back.

Best SCY times:

• 100 back – 1:02.95
• 100 free – 57.75
• 50 free – 26.43

Pires will join the Panthers, helmed by Toby Wilcox, in the fall of 2021. Both the women and the men won their respective 2021 SAA Conference Championship titles this year, the women for the 6th straight time, the men for the 7th.

Pires would have scored in the B final of the 100 back at the 2021 conference meet. It took 25.89/56.05 in the 50/100 free to make it back (the SAA only scores an A final and a B final).
