Summer Juniors Breaststroker John Watson (2023) Verbals to Mizzou

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

John Watson, from Greater Omaha Aquatics in Omaha, Nebraska, verbally committed last November to swim and study at the University of Missouri beginning in the 2023-24 school year.

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Missouri! Special thanks to my family, teammates, Creighton Prep teachers, Tom Beck, and every GOAL coach for getting me to where I am today. Another huge thanks to Coach Grevers and the entire Mizzou staff for giving me this opportunity. Go Tigers!!!”

Since his original commitment, the Creighton Prep junior has continued to improve in his main events. A year ago, at the 2020 18&U Winter Championships, he went best times in the 100 free (47.02), 500 free (4:37.03), 100 breast (56.57), 200 breast (2:02.95), and 200 IM (1:51.79). This December, he competed at Winter Juniors-East and went 55.85 in the 100 breast, 2:01.78 in the 200 breast, 1:50.90 in the 200 IM, and 3:54.89 in the 400 IM. His 400 IM time was 9 seconds faster than his PB from two months earlier at the DSMY Spooktacular, when he had taken 10 seconds off his previous best time.

This past summer, Watson swam at Lenexa (Kansas) Sectionals and then at Speedo Summer Championships-West. He earned best times in the 200 breast (2:21.99) and 200 IM (2:10.20) at Sectionals, and in the 100 breast (1:06.83) and 100 fly (59.12) at Summer Championships.

Best SCY times:

  • 200 breast – 2:01.78
  • 100 breast – 55.85
  • 400 IM – 3:54.89
  • 200 IM – 1:50.82
  • 200 free – 1:42.51
  • 100 free – 47.02
  • 200 back – 1:51.77
  • 100 back – 51.60

He will overlap with Mikolaj Malec, Ty Spillane, Josh Pales, Frederik Rindshøj, and Cade Oliver, who make up the bulk of the Tigers’ breaststroke and IM group.
