Steenbergen Finishes With Two More Youth Records at Dutch Champs

The Dutch Short Course National Championships concluded today in Tilburg. There were four new records set on the final day of competition.

Marritt Steenbergen continued to rewrite the record book when it comes to Dutch youth national records. Steenbergen, broke both the 100 and 200 freestyle records earlier in the competition and set two more youth national records on the final day of competition.

She set the 50 freestyle record in the prelims posting a time of 25.02, but did not better it in the finals. She also set a new mark in the prelims in the 100 IM qualifying for the final in a time of 1:00.61. At night she bettered the record once again winning the event by almost two seconds, finishing in a time of 59.87.

There is some debate to whether Kim Busch set a new junior world record in the women’s 50 butterfly posting a time of 26.54. The meet results have her time listed as a new junior world record, but FINA does not have an up to date list of short course records posted.

Busch’s previous best was a 26.69 which she put up earlier this year.

Busch she finished second in the event to Elinore de Jong who recorded a time of 26.49.

Juri Dijkstra set a new age group record for 15 year olds in the men’s 50 breaststroke hitting the wall in a time of 29.26.

Maarten Brzoskowski dominated the men’s 1500 freestyle winning the event in a time of 14:51.34 over a minute ahead of the next competitor.

Once of the closest races on the evening was the women’s 400 freestyle where Esmee Vermeulen pulled away from Rienke Terink in the final 50 meters winning the event in a time of 4:10.20. Terink finished second in a time of 4:10.92.
