In a late scratch, Connor Black of the Stanford Cardinal has been taken out of his entered events– the 100 fly, 50 free, and the 100 free.
Here’s where he was seeded in each event:
- 100 fly, 22nd
- 50 free, 46th
- 100 free, 47th
Black, a junior, wasn’t able to score at last year’s NCAA’s individually, with his best showing being a 23rd place finish in the 100 fly. He did split a 19.27 as Stanford’s third 200 free relay leg, and that relay went on to finish 14th overall.
UPDATED NCAA MEN’S DIVISION I INVITED LIST
This scratch means that Cal breaststroker Hunter Cobleigh is into the meet. He was on the bubble in the 200 breast, but with Black’s scratch, his 1:55.34 puts him at #30 in the 200 breast.
In addition, his 53.60 in the 100 breast, which is under the NCAA ‘B’ cut, seeds him 39th in that event.
Cobleigh is now the fourth alternate to be invited to NCAAs due to scratches. Michigan’s Ian Rainey was the first to be invited off of the alternate list, followed by Duke’s James Peek and Dustin Tynes of Ohio State.

what happened to him?
This is probably Captain Obvious territory here, but I feel compelled to confirm… I assume this means he won’t swim relays either?
Well I’m pretty sure this is his senior year so I’m assuming that whatever caused him to scratch means he’s not swimming at all. Pretty big blow to Stanford though. Man, Nolan’s graduation really shows how much that team is missing star power this year. Not that they don’t have some solid freshman and sophomores, but I don’t see any of their relays doing that well against the competition this go around
I believe Connor is a junior this year, so he’ll have one more year in which to represent Stanford. He did well at Pac12s…and his impact on the relays will be missed.
They do have a pretty good class coming in next year though, I think they’ll be fine
True, their class is quite solid. A smaller class, if one considers 6 a smaller class…for Stanford, I would. Some big names in Shoults and Sweetser. Murphy has done well of late, and MacMillan will be a nice plus, as will Ho. Still looks like breaststroke is a liability, though they bring in Poppe – he does looks more like a short-distance breaststroke guy, so that’s beneficial for both medley relays. Not much of a sprint-focused bunch overall, but a good deal of talent. And, with the return of Kremer, that will be significant. Their distance free, long fly, and IMs will be their strong suit, I feel. Less so for their relays, perhaps?
