The South Carolina high school swimming state meet was held this past weekend at the University of South Carolina. The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls and St. Joseph’s Catholic School boys won the team titles.

Oceanside freshman Caroline Hill was one of the most decorated swimmers of the meet, taking state titles in the women’s 100 free, 200 medley relay, and 400 free relay, as well as a 3rd place finish in the 200 free. Hill started out her meet by anchoring the oceanside medley relay to victory in 24.93. Kendal Chunn led the relay off in 26.80, followed by Chrisman Rand (31.15) on breast, and Sophia McCoy (26.68) on fly for a final time of 1:49.56. Hill then came in 3rd in the 200 free, finishing in 2:02.12. There was a tight race for 1st in the event, with Mary Kate Farrell (St. Joseph’s) establishing the early lead over Emma Sullivan (Waccamaw), finishing 1:55.01 to 1:55.24. Hill took the title in the 100 free with a 53.20, thanks to a quick 25.75 on the first 50. Hill concluded her meet with a 54.57 lead-off leg on the Oceanside 400 free relay, helping it to win the event in 3:39.61. Anna Albert followed Hill in 56.58, with Kendal Chunn going next in 52.70, and Chrisman Rand anchoring in 55.76.

Mary Kate Farrell, the 200 free champion, went on to win the 100 breast in 1:07.72. Kendal Chunn, member of both the winning Oceanside relays, went on to win the 200 IM and 100 back. Chunn was dominant in the IM, touching in 2:04.83. She swam the fastest split in the field in all 4 strokes, splitting 27.28/30.77/37.19/29.59 respectively. Chunn also won huge in the 100 back, clocking a 57.64, finishing 4 seconds ahead of the field.

Jill Smiley, a sophomore from Bishop England, took the women’s 100 fly with a 56.93. Smiley finished first by over 2 seconds, taking the race out in 26.78 and coming home in 30.15.

Silas Crosby (St. Joseph’s Catholic School) was a member of two winning relays, as well as winning the boys 500 free title, and coming in 2nd in the 200 free. Crosby started out his meet by anchoring the St. Joseph’s medley relay to victory in 22.34. James Cline led the relay off in 26.20, and was followed by Jack Doyle (27.81) on breast, and Preston Jennings (23.92) on fly for a fional time of 1:40.27. Crosby then came in 2nd in the boys 200 free, finishing in 1:44.36. Nathan DePiero (Christ Church Episcopal School) won the event handily, clocking a 1:41.71. Crosby then won the 500 free by 10 seconds, touching the wall in 4:41.69. He finished his meet with a 48.69 split on the 2nd leg of the 400 free relay.  Colin Jordan led the relay off in 48.55, with Jack Doyle swimming 3rd (50.71), and Preston Jennings anchoring (48.33) for a final time of 3:16.28.

200 free champion Nathan DePiero also won the boys 100 free, touching in 47.25. DePiero brought his 100 home with a very quick 24.00 on the 2nd 50. He also anchored the Christ Church Episcopal School 200 free relay to victory with a 20.94. His split was the fastest in the field by far. Wyatt Weir led that relay off in 23.13, followed by Arthur Bishop (22.50), and Porter Brown (23.49), helping the relay to a final time of 1:30.06. Depiero finished his meet by anchoring the 400 free relay in 46.52, which was the fastest split in the field by a significant margin.

May River’s John Brester won a pair of individual events on the day. Brester took the 50 free, clocking a 21.65 to finish as the only swimmer in the field to break 22 seconds. He then went on to win the 100 breast in 58.82.
