Sprinter Mairin O’Brien Commits to Ohio State

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mairin O’Brien from Hathaway Brown High School in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio has verbally committed to Ohio State University. O’Brien is a high school junior and will join the varsity program in Columbus in the fall of 2021.

O’Brien is a lifelong Buckeye supporter, and included in her Instagram announcement a photograph with her as a small child posing with Brutus the Buckeye: Ohio State’s mascot.

I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at THE Ohio State University!! I want to thank all of my friends, family and coaches who have surrounded me with endless support throughout this process. I chose Ohio State for the awesome student services and unmatched facilities, the team, culture, and the great coaching staff! It is a great privilege to be able to represent this top tier program and university. I cannot wait to join the buckeye family! go bucks❤️🌰

Primarily a sprint freestyler, O’Brien finished 2nd at last season’s Ohio High School Division II (small school) State Championship meet in the 50 free, and 7th in the 100 free. Since that meet, she’s taken huge chunks out of her lifetime bests in both races, swimming 23.24 and 50.53 in the 50 and 100, respectively, at the Winter Junior Championships – East meet in December. Ohio’s High School State Championship meet is in February, and if the pattern holds, she’s due for more drops from Juniors to the high school championship season.

O’Brien began her high school career at Gates Mills Hawken High School, where as a freshman she led off a State Record-setting relay in 2018

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 23.24
  • 100 free – 50.53
  • 200 free – 1:51.27
  • 100 back – 56.64

The Ohio State women returned a ton of points from last season, including their top 4 sprinters, but with pending graduations of senior Lucija Jurkovic-Perisa, junior Taylor Petrak, and junior Freya Rayner in the season-and-a-half before O’Brien arrives, they will be badly in need of added depth in their sprint freestyle group.

The Buckeyes have addressed that need substantially over their next 2 classes. Besides O’Brien, that group includes Texan KitKat Zenick (22.4/48.8), Montanan Catherine Russo (22.7/51.4), Virginian Paige Hall (23.5/50.8), and especially British sprinter Emily Crane, who arrives next fall with long course bests of 25.7 and 55.6 in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

O’Brien trains with the Cleveland Swim Institute.
