Speedster Lexie Mulvihill from Tampa, Florida has verbally committed to the Auburn Tigers. Part of the high school class of 2021, Mulvihill is Auburn’s first commit among the current high school junior class and one of the first such commitments nationally.
“The moment I stepped on campus, I knew Auburn is where I am meant to be. The feeling of home and family is what I have always dreamed of in a school which is why I’m beyond excited to announce that I have verbally committed to further my academic and swimming careers at Auburn University. I can’t thank my coach and teammates enough for pushing me in the pool on a daily basis, and my family and friends for all their support. Special thanks to my parents for being the best role models I can ask for and my brother for being my number one fan. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Auburn family and with that being said… WAR EAGLE!”
Mulvihill swims for George Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, Florida and with Tampa Elite Aquatics Manta Rays (TEAM).

Last season, she ranked 34th nationally in the 100 yard fly among 15 & unders and was the Florida High School 4A (big schools) State Championship runner-up in the 50 yard free. Her 200 medley relay potential is already enticing: she swam 25.7 in the 50 back at NCSAs in March. She has a lot of good relay swims on her resume to boot: she’s split 22.65 in a 50 free on a rolling start.
Mulvihill is a 2-time Scholastic All-America and already has her Olympic Trials cut in the 50 free (25.90). She also participates in Swim Across America. Her dad, Mike, swam collegiately at East Carolina.

@Michelle Verbals are tough to explain and rely on a lot of faith between athletes and coach. In general if a coach worth his or her salt offers one with the backing of admissions, etc, and the athlete continues their good academic standing and continues to train in the pool, then there aren’t issues. Athletes change their minds and coaches move teams for many different reasons for sure, so you can change your verbal. But most of the time, if You track the verbals, they pretty much stick a high percentage of time in swim. I would say 6/7 not 1/7. Just to clarify…..you mean Coach Gary Taylor from Auburn. Not her former coach Gary Goodner II, who has been added to the safe sport database for allegations of misconduct and is under an interim measure – restriction.

Congratulations to Ms. Mulvihill! However, the avalanche of ‘verbal commitments’ we’re seeing shouldn’t disguise from swimmers and parents the one essential fact – verbal commitments are just oral announcements of intention, BUT THEY ARE COMPLETELY UNENFORCEABLE! Certainly coaches will do everything they can to move an athlete along toward signing a National Letter of Intent on the given date. But in business it’s often said ‘a verbal agreement is worth the paper it’s printed on’! It’s stress-relieving in a sense for the swimmer, but many things can happen – the coach may go to another school, the coach may lose interest and withdraw the verbal offer if performance drops, or a faster swimmer may opt for the school and take… Read more »

Good question from KLORN8D, PARENT, MUDDYWATERS AND DADDY. The best data source I’ve found is a Sports Illustrated article which examined verbal commitments made by the 500 players in the Rival 100 high school football players between 2007-2011. SI found that “73 players – 14.6% – de-committed at some point during their recruitment.” Of course swimmers aren’t football players [I’m not aware of such a study done solely with D1 swimmers] but this actual data supports the point about the non-binding nature of verbal commitments. If your swimmer is going for the coach and not the education and the fact they love the school, there is a problem there
Maybe I’ve missed some but I think that ‘avalanche’ you are referring to for the Class of ‘21 is one female to a Florida and one to Auburn, hardly an avalanche to date…though it will come. And while inevitably some things will change for some swimmers and some schools, I’ve seen the vast majority on both sides honor those commitments….just like they do in the business world. Business and swimming are both small worlds and people who build reputations for not honoring commitments don’t fare well in the long term in my opinion.
What facts or proof do you have of 1 in 7 swimmers go to a different school?
Muddy – hope you saw the reference to Sports Illustrated as the best source, but all 500 HS athletes were football players. Also, SI didn’t differentiate between changes by the colleges and changes initiated by the athletes. So we can’t say for swimmers specifically.mi
1/7 in the entire spectrum of NCAA sports, not just swimmers.
