Spanish Selection Policy for 2020 European Long Course Championships

First, for the Spanish National Team, the selection policy outlines the different cycles of qualification, including those Spanish swimmers who met the included qualifying marks during the 2018-19 season. Additional qualifying opportunities will be represented by the Amsterdam Swim Cup slated for mid-December, as well as the Spanish Open Spring Championships in April of 2020.

As for the 2020 European Long Course Championships, the RFEN includes a table of times, also inserted below, that will need to be achieved at the Spanish Open Spring Championships in April of 2020. A maximum of 4 swimmers may be selected per event, save for the 800m and 1500m free, as well as the 50m non-Olympic events, which will see a maximum of 2 swimmers.

The European Championships qualifying times are graded by the number of swimmers, meaning that the QT stiffens if more than 1 athlete is to be brought to Budapest.
At the 2018 edition of the European Long Course Championships, Spain tied the nations of Greece and Poland in 13th place in the overall swimming medal table. Spain raced its way to just 2 medals in the form of 1 silver and 1 bronze, in Glasgow. Joan Lluis Pons took bronze in the men’s 400m IM while Jessica Vall came away with silver in the 200m breast.
However, the nation was without its Olympic champion in Mireia Belmonte, as the Spanish superstar withdrew just 2 weeks prior to the start of the 2018 edition of the competition due to health concerns.
