On the third night of the 2023 Canadian Olympic Trials, Sophie Angus pulled off a 1:07.68 in the 100 breaststroke to win a national title and get nominated to the World Champs team. The swim by Angus got her under the secondary qualifying standard of 1:08.02 while missing the 1:07.35 FINA A cut.
The biggest swims of the night came in the 200 IMs where back-to-back Canadian records fell at the hands of Summer McIntosh and Finlay Knox. McIntosh started off with a 2:06.79 in the women’s race to break her own former national record of 2:08.08.
McIntosh broke a world record in the 400 freestyle earlier in the meet, meaning that she now has two events on her lineup for the 2023 World Championships. Sydney Pickrem, who previously qualified for Worlds in the 200 breast, also qualified in the 200 IM with her 2nd place time of 2:08.61.
In the men’s 200 IM, Finlay Knox had a dominant swim of 1:57.26 to hit the fastest time by a Canadian man, undercutting the FINA A cut of 1:59.53. With that time he joined the Fukuoka squad but second-place finisher Ilya Kharun was a bit shy of the cut with a 2:00.04.
Maggie MacNeil and Josh Liendo were the only ones under the FINA A cuts in the women’s and men’s 50 freestyle, respectively. After both winning the 100 fly yesterday, MacNeil and Liendo have now added a second event to their lineups.
With the addition of Angus and Knox to the roster, Canada now has 16 swimmers on their projected roster for the 2023 World Championships this summer.

What’s the secondary qualifying time for the M 100 br? Wouldn’t James Dergousoff be named to the team for the medley relay?
1:00.35 . Reading the criteria, it looks like Dergousoff would be eligible to qualify for the medley relay based on priority 6 – technically would need to wait for the results of the 100 free to see if the time standard is met, but practically speaking, it’s a non-issue so I would expect him to get named in the end

Summer in 2IM is missing on listing
Throughout the Day 3 of the Canadian Trials, there is still a couple of notable swimmers not yet qualified
Smith, Harvey, Wog, Cieplucha, Andison, Dergousoff, Nicol, Mastromatteo, Bellio, Dunford and Gaziev. There is also Ruck and Oleksiak, but neither are competing at these trials and both will probably get spots in the relays should they decide to compete at Worlds.
