I would like to see Sjostrom give the 200 IM a serious effort – although I probably never will. She has a PR of 59.98 in the back, and IM is the sprintiest of the 200s.

what’s her 100 breast time?

She swam it in 2011 and went 1:09.67 untapered. Her splits were 32.20 – 37.47

Best time I found was 1:11.28 short course meters from 2013. It could be that the 1:09 was not reported to the National database.

She’s already the best women’s butterfly sprinter in the world and up there with the best freestyle sprinters. That at least gives her a head start in prepping for the IM. It would be interesting to see, but she does seem to prefer the sprint events. Maybe the 100m IM in the short course sometime?

They’ll have to bring him when he breaks the world record

Think they would like for swimmers to be close to or under the FINA A cut unless they are picked up for relays, then they might swim individual events.

Sweden do only select does who have a chance of reaching a final 🙁

in 2012 that was not enough for the Swedish Olympic Committee and some athletes that had been selected internationally (not just swimmers) were denied because they were thought of not having an honest chance of making top 6 at the 2012 Olympics.

I saw the title and I thought” Well who else is she going to swim for?”

And Jennie Johansson finished 9 in 100 breaststroke in Rio, didn’t reach the final.

How final is Sjostrom’s decision to not compete at 200 free. If she isn’t practicing and racing 200 free this season then what this 4×200 relay is all about. Sure her time will be good but I think that other members of relay are expecting her to be excellent in order for the team to succeed. Not just good. If she does take her duties responsibly then she has to prepare herself for such race. And if she does it then why to miss a great chance to be a world champion.
Too bad that 100 free, 50 fly and 50 free are at the end of the meet and three 200 races may take away the freshness so… Read more »

They are not going to swim the 4*200 relay this summer, since Ida Marko Varga retired and their 4th girl is now about 2.04. In Rio Sjöström, Coleman, Louise Hansson, and Marko Varga swam 4*200, not Ida Lindborg as the article states. Those four also swam 4*100 in the finals in Rio, Ida Lindborg only swam prelims.

Sarah will sweep 50/100 free and fly.

50 and 100 fly? Most likely.
50 and 100 free, well … she’ll have tighter competition there. She’ll be up against Bronte Campbell in both, who’s personal best time is noticeably faster than Sarah’s in both, and according to news, she’s recovered fully from her shoulder issues last year. Oleksiak is also in the 100 (who is still 16, and teenagers tend to develop a lot faster than adults.) She improved on her personal best time by more than half a second between last year’s Canadian trials and the Olympics (4 months), and although she was slower at the trials this year, she’s almost a second faster than the month before in the 100 free and almost 2 seconds… Read more »

Yes indeed. That Manuel back half is nothing to play with. And training for the LCM 200 with Ledecky is only going to improve her LCM 100 free.

Sarah Sjostrom is the fastest all-time at 50 free in textile.
Bronte Campbell’s personal best at 100 free is better than Sjostrom’s one just by 0.02 sec.

Ok, I admit I made a mistake there. There’s so much information floating in my head about so many different subjects that sometimes I get my data crossed. That doesn’t change my point that the 100m freestyle could very well be a tight competition. I know that short course swimming is different than long course and that people swim faster in relays than in individual events, but in the medley relay in Windsor, Oleksiak swam 51.07 in the freestyle leg. That’s fairly close to Cate Campbell’s 50.91 world record. Sarah Sjostrom’s National Record in the 100m freestyle short course (set in 2015) is 51.24.
Again, I know that short course swimming is different, but that’s a measure you can’t… Read more »

Maybe 100free will be the race of the meet but most likely will not. All swimmers you listed will be within 52.8 – 53.2 range. Sarah Sjostrom found new source of speed just recently and will for sure improve her personal bests at free in Budapest. She has a proven record of being able to maintain her form from April through Agust. 100 free final is the second of her individual races on the day 6 of the meet. 100 fly final will be on day 2. So if she won’t do anything in between (like 200 free solo or relay) she will be fresh and ready to better her one month old personal best that is already impressive 52.54

Not true.
Sarah swam the fastest ever 50 free in textile, beating Cate’s PB by 0.01 second just a few weeks ago. She’s red hot favorite to win 50 free. No one else swimming in Budapest has sub 24 swim.
Her 100 free PB from a few weeks ago is also similar to Bronte’s PB.

And now without being shackled by individual 200 free and the 4×200 relay, she will unleash her sprint prowess. The only one who could stop her won’t be in Budapest.

and don’t forget the annual Aussie choke job…well actually this is WCs not Olympics so C2 may be able to do it, edge still goes to Sjostrom in the 50, 100 will be a great race. I’ve got Sjostrom, Manuel/C2 (call it a tie just for the fun of it), Oleksiak but the Canadian comes back in 2020 to defend her gold

C2’s Rio issues were those of going into the meet “under done” as regards fitness/preparation due to illness & injury rather than the “choke” perpetrated by big sister. I suspect she is mentally tougher than big sister but I suspect she doesn’t have the WR potential of C1. Her issue going forward will be that of keeping a perennially fragile body together through to Tokyo. Whilst I see her being a potential player in the 100fr (but probably not the 50); I don’t expect her to be at her Kazan level.

At this point, the W100fr in Budapest resembles a rugby scrum with at least a handful with PBs within 2-3 tenths of another (Sjostrom, C2, Oleksiak, Manuel, McKeon, Kromowidjojo).… Read more »

It doesn’t make sense to swim the 200 individually or the 800 free relay. She has enough on her plate swimming the other 4 individual events (prelims, semis, and finals of each) plus prelims and finals of the relays….don’t forget there are mixed sprint relays! That could be 20 swims over the week…that is a huge lineup for one person!

Dan

Do not think they will do any mixed relays because they only brought 2 breaststrokers and 1 distance freestyler on the men’s side. They have 1 person that have been under 55 in the back but not in the last 2-3 years, 2 that have been under 50 in the free, but not this year, and 1 that have been 52 in the fly, none of those were selected for the team

Sarah dislikes the 200 free to put it mildly and with her new coach, they have changed her Freestyle stroke a little so it will most likely be no more 200 free unless there is another swimmer from Sweden that can improve and be a 1:58-1:59 at least flat start relay.

To say dislike is to put it too mildly. She stated couple years ago that she hated to practice for 200 free because it is too tough without any pleasure. But she is so fast and consistent at this event that fairly can be called the queen of this event.
She has 6 performances under 1:55 and three of them under 1:54.4
Ledecky has 6 performances under 1:55 and only one under 1:54.4
Pellegrini has 5 performances under 1:55 and only one 1:54.55 that is NOT in high-tech suit.
Schmitt has 3 performances under 1:55 and only one under 1:54.4

The temptation is very strong because Ledecky still has this excruciating double 1500 final- 200 semi… Read more »

THE QUEEN of 200 Free?.. maybe once she wins an Olympic Gold Medal then she can be considered, but until then, she’ll remain and will always be a ‘Lady in Waiting’ in 2 Free. You might have a better leg to stand on if you nominated her for Queen of sprint fly. Just sayin.

Of course it is a matter of taste. For little girl the Queen is the one who is most beautiful. For you it is the one who won once Olympic gold medal (silver doesn’t count), for Italian fans regardless any criteria it is Federica Pellegrini with her numerous great performances during unbelievably long time span, for some one it could be the world record holder, etc
My criteria are listed in my previous comment. It is not an international standard or commonly accepted approach. It is a personal view based on power and consistency of performances.
At the end the real Queen is always about power.
