Sometimes, all it takes for big swims is a little bit of atmosphere, rather than any tapering, and that has very much been the case at the 2016 USA College Challenge on an otherwise innocuous weekend. The latest record fell at the hands of Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey on Sunday afternoon when she swam a 1:42.93 in the 200 yard free.

The conference doesn’t formally refer to the fastest Big Ten swimmers ever as ‘records’ (as compared to championship records, which they do keep); but they do maintain an all-time top performers list. Haughey already sat atop those rankings with a 1:43.35 done in a 5th-place finish at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Haughey is a sophomore who came to Michigan from Hong Kong, whom she represented at the 2016 Olympic Games. In Rio, she became the first swimmer from Hong Kong in 64 years to qualify for an Olympic semi-final.

Haughey’s splits:

  • 2016 NCAA Champs: 24.30/50.77/1:17.16/1:43.35
  • 2016 Big Ten Challenge: 24.26/50.47/1:16.86/1:42.93

In the race, Haughey beat out Louisville sophomore Mallory Comerford, who was 2nd at last year’s NCAA Championships. The two were the only freshmen in the A final at NCAAs last year. Comerford placed 2nd on Sunday in 1:43.28.
