Simon Knocks Off Pereira At The Brazilian Open Champs

Thiago Simon had the swim of his life tonight at the Brazilian Open National Championships as he not only improved over a second on his best 200 IM time, but he also got his hand on the wall before his hero Olympic champion Thiago Pereira. Simon, whose best time coming into the competition was a 2:01.88, won the men’s 200 IM in a time of 2:00.39 eight one-hundredths of a second ahead of Pereira who won the bronze in the same event in Barcelona this summer.

“I know Thiago is training hard and that his goal was not here . He is on another level and I took the opportunity,” Simon told globoesporte.

“He has had great results and here is competition. No one wins forever. It was important that he be there , wanting to win,” said Pereira, who was using the event to focus on technical aspects of his race.

“It is important for me to have more people in the medley . Gotta have this dispute . This is a test that is growing in Brazil and hopefully many swimmers appear in it.”

Three more athletes achieved Pan Pacific Championship standards on the third night of competition at the Brazilian National Championships. In this morning’s Senior Championships two athletes were under the Pan Pac cuts, Guilherme Guido in the men’s 50 backstroke (24.95) and Etiene Medeiros in the women’s 50 backstroke (28.15). Medeiros time in the morning broke the Senior Championship record and she returned in the evening to better her time and set an Open Championship record posting a time of 28.11.
